Position Overview

The Director of Marketing and Communications (DMC) serves as a visionary leader and catalyst for growth, enhancing the brand presence of The Washington Ballet and The Washington School of Ballet by engaging a diverse array of stakeholders. The DMC is tasked with overseeing marketing, communications, media relations, and visual branding, ensuring that The Washington Ballet remains a prominent choice for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

In collaboration with the Board of Directors' Marketing Committee and senior leadership, the DMC will refine and execute a comprehensive marketing strategy that aligns with the organization's mission and drives audience engagement, ticket sales, and overall attendance. This includes developing pricing strategies and fostering interdepartmental collaboration to optimize revenue from various sources.

The DMC will manage the marketing budget, ensuring that all strategies are financially sustainable and aligned with both artistic and business objectives. Reporting directly to the Executive and Artistic Directors, the DMC will also oversee a dedicated team responsible for communications, marketing, audience engagement, box office operations, and patron services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze historical data and audience behavior to inform strategic decisions and direct departmental activities.
  • Design and implement initiatives aimed at increasing ticket sales, enhancing customer loyalty, and transitioning single-ticket buyers into subscription and group sales.
  • Enhance the visibility of The Washington Ballet within the local business and tourism sectors, while supporting development efforts to convert ticket buyers into donors.
  • Identify and pursue partnership opportunities with peer organizations, establishing The Washington Ballet as a leader in both local and national arts communities.
  • Proactively seek public relations opportunities to promote the organization’s impact and enhance brand awareness.
  • Lead the Marketing and Communications Department, overseeing recruitment, day-to-day operations, vendor relationships, and the professional development of staff.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen brand reputation and maximize revenue.
  • Mentor colleagues on marketing and sales strategies, while managing relationships with audience members and educational stakeholders.
  • Develop and adhere to the departmental budget, ensuring compliance with vendor contracts.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of all marketing channels, utilizing data analytics to inform future strategies.
  • Manage vendor relationships to enhance ticket sales and brand presence.
  • Collaborate with senior team members to leverage community engagement programs and special events to expand the audience base.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and new technologies that can enhance revenue generation.
  • Oversee merchandise programs to maximize revenue opportunities.
  • Supervise key team members, including the Marketing Manager and Ticketing staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in marketing or public relations, preferably within the arts or non-profit sector, with at least 4 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven expertise in branding, marketing, communications, and ticket sales.
  • Strong understanding of market dynamics and audience trends.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills.
  • Familiarity with video production and digital marketing tools.
  • Excellent organizational and collaborative abilities.
  • Experience in staff management and effective communication with senior leadership.
  • Detail-oriented, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
  • Able to thrive in high-pressure environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of ballet as an art form.
  • Experience with Tessitura software.
  • Familiarity with content management systems and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
