Job Summary

Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Food Service Director, oversee the operations of a middle school lunch serving area and snack bar.


Key Responsibilities:

Positions in this category are tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of lunch serving facilities and snack bars at a middle school.

Additionally, incumbents will supervise one subordinate worker and 8-12 student workers, while also performing various food preparation, serving, and sanitation duties.


Core Duties:

  • Prepare the snack bar and lunch serving areas for daily operations.
  • Heat and assemble a variety of food items including hamburgers, corndogs, pizzas, spaghetti, chili, nacho cheese, garlic bread, hot dogs, and burritos.
  • Prepare salads, fruits, and other items for boxed lunches for the cafeteria.
  • Heat and serve lunches delivered from the Central Kitchen.
  • Manage cash and lunch ticket transactions while maintaining necessary records.
  • Order, inventory, and store supplies for the snack bar and cafeteria.
  • Determine food combinations for boxed lunches and assemble them accordingly.
  • Monitor snack bar inventory and complete cash accounting forms.
  • Supervise and assist in the cleaning of utensils, dishes, trays, and food service equipment.
  • Complete monthly payroll forms for student workers.
  • Count cash or verify counts and prepare daily bank deposit forms.
  • Maintain records and generate reports as needed.
  • Communicate with parents and staff as required.
  • Recruit student workers and oversee the completion of all necessary employment documentation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

Fundamental principles of supervision and training; methods for preparing, packaging, and serving food in large quantities; kitchen tools and equipment; food safety practices and kitchen sanitation; cleaning and maintaining food service areas and equipment; basic arithmetic skills.


Ability to:

Operate kitchen appliances and equipment; maintain accurate records; follow oral and written instructions; read and write at a level necessary for job performance; establish and maintain effective working relationships; supervise others; accurately count money and supplies; adhere to schedules; and work under time constraints.


Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to two years of experience in large-scale food preparation and service. Coursework in food service preparation, sanitation, and safety is desirable.

Working Conditions:
Food preparation environment subject to heat, lifting, bending, and standing.

Requirements / Qualifications

Prior food service experience is preferred.

Completion of Mandated Reporter Training - School Personnel module is required before the first day of employment.

Comments and Other Information

Considered a disaster service worker and/or essential worker during emergencies, crises, and/or pandemics.
