About Us

At the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, we take pride in being part of an organization that embodies core values such as Trust, Empowerment, and Collaboration. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is paramount as we ensure the safety and reliability of our nation's naval nuclear reactors while training the Sailors who operate these reactors in the U.S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. If you are seeking a fulfilling career, we encourage you to explore opportunities with us.

Job Overview

The Shipyard Field Engineering team is in search of motivated professionals to join our Reactor Plant Contractors' Office (RPCO). This role offers a unique opportunity for growth and development, granting significant autonomy. Positions are available in Integrated Plant Testing and Refueling Services. This hands-on role allows you to significantly contribute to the integration of various stakeholders, ensuring the successful maintenance and construction of naval nuclear vessels.

The Test Engineer role entails 8-10 months of in-house technical qualification, while the Reactor Servicing Engineer role requires approximately 6 months of in-house technical qualification (shorter duration with relevant prior experience). Upon successful completion of the technical training at designated laboratories, candidates will be relocated to a naval shipyard.

Key Responsibilities

RPCO Field Engineers act as independent representatives at nuclear-capable shipyards and Naval Bases. Their responsibilities encompass:

  • Providing technical support, consultation, and oversight during installation, testing, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of complex equipment and nuclear systems.
  • Engaging in a shipboard industrial environment, collaborating directly with ship's force, senior shipyard leadership, and Naval Reactors.
  • Proactively identifying and mitigating potential issues to prevent impacts on costs and delivery schedules.
  • Offering technical guidance for problem resolution and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Researching, evaluating, and recommending new products and equipment upgrades as necessary.

As this is a career development opportunity, it is highly recommended that candidates return to one of the laboratory locations after completing a 3-5 year field assignment to further their careers as leaders within the organization.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess one of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a science-related field with 6 years of relevant experience; or

  • Prior operational or design experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Leadership and mentoring capabilities.
