Boulder, Colorado, United States Southwest Research Institute Full time
Position: Research Scientist - Stellar Magnetism

About Us:

At Southwest Research Institute, we are at the forefront of space science exploration and the development of advanced spacecraft instrumentation. Our mission is to uncover the mysteries of our solar system and the broader universe.

We are seeking a research scientist with expertise in magnetohydrodynamic convection and parallel software engineering to enhance our team and support ongoing investigations into the solar dynamo.

Key Responsibilities:

Engage in numerical simulations of stellar interior convection, emphasizing the dynamics linked to angular momentum transport influenced by small-scale magnetic fields.

Assist in formulating a theoretical framework to interpret the physical significance of newly identified inertial waves within the solar photosphere.

Implement alternative basis function representations in the Rayleigh convection code to enable the application of sparse linear solving techniques.

Establish and expand an independent research initiative through external funding opportunities.

Daily Tasks:

Independently design and execute numerical experiments and theoretical studies aimed at investigating angular momentum transport and magnetic field generation within stellar interiors.

Communicate and share research findings with the wider scientific community, which includes participating in professional conferences, submitting research papers to peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to departmental meetings.

Proactively pursue external funding for research projects and engage in collaborative proposals that align with the strategic objectives of the department.

Participate in the mentorship of postdoctoral researchers in our group focusing on stellar dynamo theory.

Contribute to the ongoing development of open-source fluid dynamics software packages such as Rayleigh, Dedelus, and Coral.

Qualifications:

A PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Solar Physics, Planetary Sciences, or a related discipline is required.

A minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience in scientific software development, demonstrating proficiency in compiled programming languages such as FORTRAN and C/C++, as well as familiarity with MPI and OpenMP standards.

3 years of postdoctoral experience in the development of sparse-matrix and/or parallel-spectral algorithms applicable to fluid solvers.

3 years of postdoctoral experience utilizing computational fluid dynamics software (e.g., ASH, Rayleigh, Dedelus, Magic) for the analysis of stellar and planetary convection.

A proven postdoctoral record of published research in solar dynamo studies and related fields, including convection, magnetohydrodynamics, and atmospheric wave theory.

Special Requirements:

This position is based in Boulder, Colorado.

Salary Range:

$71,000 - $119,246.00
