At Southwest Research Institute, we are at the forefront of space science and spacecraft technology, dedicated to uncovering the mysteries of our solar system and beyond.
We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher to join our esteemed Department of Solar and Heliospheric Physics, where collaboration on innovative studies of the solar dynamo is encouraged.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct advanced numerical modeling of stellar interior convection, focusing on dynamics related to small-scale magnetism.
- Contribute to the establishment of a theoretical framework to interpret the physical implications of newly identified inertial waves in the solar photosphere.
- Enhance and maintain open-source fluid dynamics software packages, including Rayleigh, Dedelus, and Coral.
- Develop a robust independent research program supported by external funding.
- Engage in collaborative proposal efforts that align with the strategic objectives of the department.
Daily Responsibilities:
Independently design and execute numerical experiments and theoretical studies aimed at exploring angular momentum transport and magnetic field generation within stellar interiors.
Analyze and visualize fluid simulation data to assess trends in relation to expected physical conditions in stellar environments.
Present research findings at professional conferences and meetings, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
Participate actively in departmental meetings and contribute to the Solar group discussions.
Proactively seek and apply for external funding opportunities to support research initiatives.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Solar Physics, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral experience in scientific software development utilizing compiled languages such as FORTRAN and C/C++.
- Experience in parallel programming with MPI and OpenMP standards for at least 2 years.
- Proficiency in Python programming and familiarity with Python data analysis libraries, including NumPy and Matplotlib, for a minimum of 2 years.
- Experience applying computational fluid dynamics software (e.g., ASH, Rayleigh, Dedelus, Magic) to investigate stellar and planetary convection for at least 2 years.
