The Clinical Nurse Coordinator for Oncology plays a vital role in facilitating patient care in collaboration with the Attending Physician. Key responsibilities include managing patient communications, triaging concerns, overseeing symptom management, and providing education about cancer and treatment options. This position ensures the effective delivery and evaluation of healthcare services for patients and their families. The coordinator works closely with a multidisciplinary team, leveraging clinical data to drive innovative and cost-efficient practices within the healthcare system. All duties are performed in alignment with the policies and standards of MedStar Medical Group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver both direct and indirect patient care while systematically assessing the quality and appropriateness of care provided.
  • Engage with physicians and various healthcare professionals to ensure timely and effective patient care, aiming for optimal clinical outcomes.
  • Provide comprehensive education to patients regarding their diagnosis, treatment plans, and symptom management, utilizing expertise to assess and triage effectively.
  • Assist patients in navigating insurance authorizations and precertifications for necessary tests as part of their treatment strategy.
  • Address operational challenges that may affect patient outcomes, employing problem-solving skills to enhance care delivery.
  • Manage incoming inquiries from patients via phone and online portals, offering consultations and follow-up as required.
  • Monitor progress and recommend improvements for performance enhancement initiatives.
  • Support the onboarding of new staff, ensuring they complete necessary competency assessments and ongoing education.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities pertinent to the role, recognizing that the outlined duties represent a general overview and may evolve as directed by leadership.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.

Experience

  • 1-2 years of relevant clinical experience is required.
  • 1-2 years of experience in ambulatory care and oncology is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current RN licensure in the District of Columbia or a compact state is required.
  • CPR certification (including BLS and NRP) from a recognized provider is required within 90 days of hire.
  • Additional certifications may be required based on departmental needs.
  • Oncology Nurse Certification (OCN) is preferred within one year of employment.
