About Commonwealth of Virginia:

The Commonwealth of Virginia is dedicated to a future free from cancer, pursuing revolutionary ideas, promising therapies, and saving lives.

Through groundbreaking research, patient care, education, and community engagement, the Commonwealth is committed to discovering, developing, delivering, and teaching effective methods to prevent, detect, treat, and cure cancer, ensuring these advancements are accessible to all.

Established in 1974, the Commonwealth was among the first cancer centers recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

It stands as the sole cancer center in the Richmond metropolitan area and one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the state, ranking it among the top 4 percent of cancer centers nationwide.

The Commonwealth is at the forefront of establishing a modern model of equity for cancer research and care, engaging the community in its research to effectively tackle the cancer burden and disparities faced by those it serves.

The Commonwealth conducts cancer research across various domains, including basic science (laboratory), translational, clinical, and population sciences research.

A crucial aspect of the research cycle involves developing and conducting clinical trials that evaluate promising scientific breakthroughs, with the Commonwealth leading Virginia in offering a comprehensive selection of cancer clinical trials and a statewide clinical trials network that brings innovative trials to patients throughout the region.

Additionally, the Commonwealth provides extensive, award-winning cancer care, featuring a full range of medical and support services, top-quality treatments, advanced technologies, and a compassionate approach.

The Commonwealth treats patients with all types of cancer, including rare and complex cases.

World-class outpatient and inpatient care is delivered at various locations across the state by multidisciplinary teams of leading specialists who collaborate to fully coordinate and customize each patient's treatment plan.

The Commonwealth boasts the state's largest and most comprehensive bone marrow transplant program.

The Commonwealth also serves as a vital educational resource, offering academic programs and training for students, cancer researchers, and oncology healthcare professionals, along with health outreach initiatives for cancer patients, caregivers, and the community.
