Job Overview

St. Croix Health is seeking a dedicated Clinical Operations Manager for our Medical Surgical department.

Position Summary

This role is responsible for leading the Medical Surgical (Med/Surg) team, ensuring effective management of nursing and technical staff to foster a patient-centered approach to care delivery and coordination. The Clinical Operations Manager oversees daily unit operations to enhance patient safety, clinical outcomes, and overall satisfaction while facilitating efficient workflows across departments. This position also involves managing employee relations, overseeing recruitment and onboarding processes, and contributing to performance evaluations and competency assessments. Compliance with all regulatory standards and effective financial resource management are also key responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Operational Leadership

  • Oversee daily operations, programs, and resources of the Med/Surg unit to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care in accordance with best practices and regulatory standards.
  • Provide insights and recommendations for policy and procedure modifications, regularly evaluating compliance.
  • Ensure accurate documentation in line with EMR requirements and compliance obligations.
  • Deliver skilled nursing care as per the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assess and enhance the effectiveness of patient care while promoting continuous quality improvement.
  • Establish controls and feedback mechanisms to monitor departmental operations.

2. Staff Management and Development

  • Direct and guide the work of nursing staff.
  • Manage departmental schedules to ensure adequate staffing based on patient needs.
  • Ensure staff are well-trained and competent in their roles, regularly assessing their performance.
  • Mentor and develop staff to enhance their skills.
  • Oversee hiring processes, including generating requisitions, coordinating interviews, and facilitating onboarding.
  • Evaluate staff performance and assist in resolving any performance-related issues.

3. Quality Improvement Initiatives

  • Collect and analyze data to assess programs and quality initiatives.
  • Support the team with advanced procedures and concepts.
  • Ensure staff perform their duties accurately and verify EMR documentation.
  • Identify and implement process improvements across departments.
  • Plan and enhance the efficiency of business processes to improve quality and outcomes.

4. Strategic Planning

  • Assist in developing and implementing plans to achieve organizational strategic goals.

5. Clinical Expertise

  • Maintain nursing care standards and implement hospital policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all criteria within the scope of nursing responsibilities.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on Infection Prevention, Fire Safety, and other departmental policies.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in nursing procedures and patient care consistently.

6. Budget Management

  • Review and manage requests for supplies and equipment, ensuring necessary resources are available.
  • Identify capital equipment needs and escalate as necessary.
  • Educate staff on cost containment and resource conservation.
  • Monitor supply usage and collaborate with vendors on pricing.
  • Initiate cost reduction strategies and assist in budget development.

7. Additional Responsibilities

  • Implement and evaluate nursing practice standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare the department for regulatory surveys.
  • Lead various projects and initiatives as required.

Qualifications:

Education & Licensure:

  • Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
  • Current Registered Nurse license required.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required upon hire.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years in medical surgical or emergency room settings required.
  • Previous experience as a Med/Surg RN preferred.
  • At least three years of management experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Strong computer proficiency.
  • Attention to detail and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Thorough understanding of medical terminology.
  • High level of professionalism and ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • In-depth knowledge of legal medical record requirements.
  • Intermediate understanding of healthcare regulations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Medical Surgical staff, including scheduling and performance management.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and work on a computer.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and reach for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
