Position Summary
This role is responsible for leading the Medical Surgical (Med/Surg) team, ensuring the effective management of nursing and technical staff while fostering a patient-centered approach to care delivery and coordination. The Nurse Manager oversees daily operations to enhance patient safety, clinical outcomes, and overall satisfaction while ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and regulations. This position also involves managing employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operational Leadership
- Oversee daily operations and resources of the Med/Surg unit to ensure safe and effective patient care in compliance with industry standards.
- Review and suggest improvements to policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Ensure accurate documentation in accordance with electronic medical record (EMR) standards.
- Provide high-quality nursing care in line with the Nurse Practice Act.
- Monitor patient care effectiveness and promote continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Establish feedback mechanisms to assess departmental operations.
2. Staff Management and Development
- Direct and guide the work of nursing staff and ensure appropriate staffing levels based on patient needs.
- Assess staff competencies regularly and provide necessary training and development opportunities.
- Facilitate hiring processes, including interviews and onboarding for new staff.
- Evaluate staff performance and address any performance-related issues to support staff success.
3. Quality Improvement Initiatives
- Collect and analyze data to evaluate programs and quality initiatives.
- Support staff in advanced procedures and best practices.
- Ensure accurate performance of duties and compliance with documentation standards.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements across departments.
- Enhance operational efficiency and quality outcomes through strategic planning.
4. Strategic Development
- Assist in the creation and implementation of strategic plans to achieve organizational goals.
5. Clinical Expertise
- Uphold nursing care standards and implement departmental policies effectively.
- Act as a subject matter expert in areas such as Infection Prevention and Safety protocols.
- Demonstrate clinical proficiency in nursing practices and patient care.
6. Budget Management
- Review and manage supply and equipment requests to maintain operational efficiency.
- Educate staff on cost management and resource conservation.
- Assist in developing and monitoring departmental budgets.
7. Additional Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with nursing practice standards and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare the department for external evaluations and surveys.
- Lead various projects and initiatives as required.

Qualifications:
Education & Licensure:
- Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
- Current Registered Nurse license required.
- BLS and ACLS certifications required upon hire.
Experience:
- Minimum of five years of experience in medical surgical or emergency care settings.
- Prior experience as a Med/Surg RN preferred.
- At least three years of management experience preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in computer applications.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology.
- Professional demeanor with the ability to collaborate effectively.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Understanding of legal medical record requirements and healthcare regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Manage Medical Surgical staff, including scheduling and performance evaluations.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work on a computer.
- Ability to stand, bend, and reach for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
