College Station, Texas, United States Applied Research Laboratory at the Penn State University Full time

The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is in search of skilled and enthusiastic Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers. You will collaborate with diverse engineering teams to innovate and develop advanced electric and hybrid electric propulsion and power systems for undersea vehicles. This includes the design and management of energy storage systems, integration of electric motors and controllers, power management, and conducting laboratory and field tests for defense-related applications.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Lead the comprehensive design and development process to create competitive and efficient electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems and subsystems.
  • Engage in system requirements identification, flow-down, and functional allocation.
  • Carry out detailed design phases, including initial design processes such as market surveys, alternative analyses, interface control documents, functional design documents, and test plans/reports, followed by design reviews and documentation packages.
  • Utilize state-of-the-art CAD tools to capture approved hardware designs and validate that designs meet the specified requirements during large-scale system integration and verification stages.
  • Implement advanced hardware-in-the-loop testing methods to evaluate EPPS designs in conjunction with larger systems.
  • Facilitate laboratory and field testing of prototype EPPS to validate final designs.

This role can be filled at various levels based on your qualifications and experience. A Bachelor's Degree is typically required, with a Master's Degree preferred. Additional experience and competencies may be necessary for higher-level positions.

Additional Duties:

  • Act as a technical leader on multiple projects.
  • Oversee multiple and/or large-scale projects.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance technical methodologies.
  • Mentor and develop assigned employees in technical, project, and business development skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in designing low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems, including lithium-based chemistries.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools for design concepts, layouts, and procurement documentation.
  • Proven ability to work within or lead a technical team.
  • Hands-on experience with a solid understanding of electronics concepts, including the ability to build, troubleshoot, and integrate hardware into complex systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with LabVIEW and Matlab (Simulink, Stateflow, and RT-LAB) for simulation and control.
  • Knowledge of mechanical CAD tools such as Siemens NX and Solidworks.
  • Experience with electrical CAD tools, including Altium Design Suite.
  • Background in designing and operating battery management systems (BMS).
  • Prior training and experience in high voltage systems.
  • Experience with battery testing equipment.
  • Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages.

This position will require occasional travel to support field testing as part of a collaborative team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
