Position Overview: The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is on the lookout for skilled and enthusiastic Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers. This role involves collaboration with diverse engineering teams to innovate electric and hybrid electric propulsion and power systems for undersea vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the comprehensive design and development process to create competitive and efficient electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems and subsystems.
  • Engage in system requirements identification, flow-down, and functional allocation.
  • Conduct detailed design phases, including early design processes such as market surveys, alternatives analysis, interface control documents, functional design documents, and test plans/reports, followed by design reviews and documentation packages.
  • Utilize advanced CAD tools to capture approved hardware designs and validate that designs meet the specified requirements during large-scale system integration and verification stages.
  • Test EPPS designs through advanced hardware-in-the-loop methods to facilitate integration with larger systems.
  • Support laboratory and field testing of prototype EPPS to showcase final designs.

Qualifications: This position may be filled at various levels based on education and experience. A Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline is typically required. Additional experience and/or education may be necessary for higher levels.

Essential Skills:

  • Proficiency in CAD tools for design concepts, layouts, and procurement documentation generation.
  • Demonstrated capability to work within or lead a technical team.
  • Hands-on experience with a solid understanding of electronics concepts, including the ability to build, troubleshoot, and integrate hardware into complex systems.
  • Previous design experience in low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems, particularly with lithium-based chemistries, is advantageous.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with LabVIEW and Matlab (including Simulink, Stateflow, and RT-LAB) for simulation and control.
  • Familiarity with mechanical CAD tools such as Siemens NX and Solidworks.
  • Knowledge of electrical CAD tools like Altium Design Suite.
  • Experience in the design and operation of battery management systems (BMS) is a plus.
  • Experience with battery test equipment operation (e.g., Aerovironment, Arbin) is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages is a plus.
  • Prior high voltage training and experience is advantageous.

Work Environment: This position is fully on-site. The role may require occasional travel to remote locations for field testing as part of a collaborative team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
