The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is in search of skilled and enthusiastic Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers. This role involves collaboration with diverse engineering teams to innovate electric and hybrid electric propulsion and power systems for undersea vehicles.
As an engineer in this department, you will:
- Lead the design and development process for competitive and efficient electric and hybrid propulsion systems.
- Identify system requirements and manage their flow-down and functional allocation.
- Conduct detailed design stages, including market surveys, alternative analyses, and the creation of design documentation.
- Utilize advanced CAD tools to capture approved hardware designs and ensure they meet established requirements.
- Test EPPS designs using sophisticated hardware-in-the-loop methods to support integration with larger systems.
- Support laboratory and field testing of prototype EPPS to validate final designs.
This position is available at various levels based on your qualifications and experience, typically requiring a Bachelor's Degree, with a Master's Degree preferred. Additional experience and competencies may be necessary for higher positions.
Additional Responsibilities Include:
- Serving as a technical leader on multiple projects.
- Managing large and complex projects.
- Creating opportunities to enhance technical methodologies.
- Mentoring and training team members in technical and project management skills.
Required Skills:
- Experience in designing low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems, particularly with lithium-based chemistries.
- Proficiency in CAD tools for design concepts and procurement documentation.
- Ability to work within or lead a technical team effectively.
- A hands-on approach with a solid understanding of electronics concepts, including building and troubleshooting hardware.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with LabVIEW and Matlab (including Simulink, Stateflow, and RT-LAB) for simulation and control.
- Experience with mechanical CAD tools such as Siemens NX and Solidworks.
- Knowledge of electrical CAD tools like Altium Design Suite.
- Experience in designing and operating battery management systems (BMS).
- Prior training and experience in high voltage systems.
- Experience with battery test equipment.
- Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages.
This position will require occasional travel to support field testing as part of a collaborative team of researchers and engineers.
