Position Overview: The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is in search of skilled Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers. The role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams to innovate electric and hybrid electric propulsion and power systems for undersea vehicles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the comprehensive design and development cycle to create competitive and efficient electric and hybrid propulsion systems.
- Engage in the identification of system requirements and their functional allocation.
- Conduct detailed design phases, including market analysis, alternative assessments, and preparation of design documentation.
- Utilize advanced CAD tools to capture approved hardware designs and ensure compliance with specified requirements during integration exercises.
- Implement advanced hardware-in-the-loop testing methods to validate EPPS designs.
- Support both laboratory and field testing of prototype systems to confirm final design efficacy.
Qualifications:
This position is open to candidates with varying levels of experience, typically requiring a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline. Additional qualifications may be necessary for more advanced roles.
Essential Skills:
- Proficiency in CAD tools for design and documentation.
- Ability to work effectively within or lead a technical team.
- Hands-on experience with electronics concepts, including hardware integration.
- Experience in power conversion and battery systems, particularly with lithium-based technologies, is advantageous.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with LabVIEW and Matlab for simulation and control purposes.
- Experience with mechanical CAD tools such as Siemens NX and Solidworks.
- Knowledge of electrical CAD tools, including Altium Design Suite.
- Experience with battery management systems and testing equipment is a plus.
- Familiarity with embedded programming languages such as C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog is beneficial.
- Prior training in high voltage systems is an asset.
Work Environment: This role is fully on-site, requiring occasional travel for field testing as part of a collaborative team of researchers and engineers.
