Electrical Power Systems Engineer
The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is in search of skilled and enthusiastic Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers. You will collaborate with diverse engineering teams to innovate and develop advanced electric and hybrid electric propulsion and power systems for undersea vehicles. This includes the design and control of energy storage systems, integration of electric motors and controllers, power management, as well as conducting laboratory and field testing for defense-related applications.
Your Responsibilities:
- Lead the comprehensive design and development process to create competitive and efficient electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems and subsystems.
- Engage in the identification of system requirements, ensuring proper flow-down and functional allocation.
- Conduct detailed design phases, including initial design processes such as market surveys, alternatives analysis, interface control documents, functional design documents, and test plans/reports, followed by design reviews and documentation packages.
- Utilize state-of-the-art CAD tools to capture approved hardware designs, demonstrating compliance with identified requirements during large-scale system integration and verification exercises.
- Implement advanced hardware-in-the-loop testing methods to validate EPPS designs in conjunction with larger systems.
- Facilitate laboratory and field testing of prototype EPPS to showcase final designs.
Additional Duties:
- Act as a technical leader across multiple projects.
- Oversee multiple large-scale projects.
- Identify opportunities to enhance technical methodologies.
- Mentor and develop assigned employees in technical, project, and business development skills.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven design experience in low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems, particularly with lithium-based chemistries.
- Proficiency in CAD tools for design concepts, layouts, and procurement documentation generation.
- Demonstrated capability to work within or lead a technical team.
- Hands-on experience with a solid understanding of electronics concepts, with a proven ability to build, troubleshoot, and integrate hardware into complex systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with LabVIEW and Matlab (including Simulink, Stateflow, and RT-LAB) for simulation and control.
- Experience with mechanical CAD tools such as Siemens NX and Solidworks.
- Knowledge of electrical CAD tools, particularly Altium Design Suite.
- Background in the design and operation of battery management systems (BMS).
- Prior training and experience in high voltage systems.
- Experience with battery test equipment operation.
- Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages.
Your role will require occasional travel to support field testing as part of a collaborative team of researchers, engineers, and technologists. ARL at Penn State is a key player in defense science and technology research, focusing on naval missions and related fields.
This position mandates a government security investigation, and applicants must be U.S. citizens. Employment with ARL will necessitate successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.
ARL is dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, recognizing that these principles are essential to our success as a Department of Defense designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). We thrive when we leverage the talents of a diverse workforce, achieving our greatest accomplishments through varied perspectives.
