The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is in search of skilled and driven Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers. These professionals will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to innovate and develop advanced electric and hybrid electric propulsion and power systems tailored for undersea vehicles.

As part of your role, you will engage in:

  • Comprehensive Design and Development: Lead the entire design lifecycle to create competitive and efficient electric and hybrid propulsion systems.
  • Requirements Management: Participate in the identification and allocation of system requirements.
  • Detailed Design Execution: Conduct thorough design processes including market analysis, interface control documentation, and testing plans.
  • Hardware Design Validation: Utilize state-of-the-art CAD tools to capture hardware designs and ensure they meet specified requirements.
  • Advanced Testing Methods: Implement hardware-in-the-loop testing to support system integration.
  • Prototype Testing: Facilitate laboratory and field testing of EPPS prototypes to validate final designs.

This position is available at various levels, contingent upon your educational background and experience. A Bachelor's Degree is typically required, with a Master's Degree preferred. Additional qualifications may be necessary for more advanced roles.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing technical leadership across multiple projects.
  • Managing extensive projects effectively.
  • Enhancing technical methodologies.
  • Mentoring and training team members in technical and project management skills.

Required Skills:

  • Experience in designing low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems, particularly with lithium-based chemistries.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools for design and documentation.
  • Ability to work within or lead a technical team.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics, including building and troubleshooting hardware.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with LabVIEW and Matlab for simulation and control.
  • Experience with mechanical CAD tools such as Siemens NX and Solidworks.
  • Knowledge of electrical CAD tools like Altium Design Suite.
  • Experience in battery management systems (BMS).
  • Prior training in high voltage systems.
  • Experience with battery testing equipment.
  • Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog programming languages.

As a member of ARL, you will contribute to a leading research institution recognized for its excellence in defense science and technology, particularly in naval missions.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a government security investigation, and candidates must be U.S. citizens. A pre-employment drug screening is also required.

ARL is dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, recognizing that these values are essential to our success as a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC).
