Position Overview

Summary
UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division of the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of skilled instructors to deliver online courses in our Writing and Literature programs.
We are looking for enthusiastic educators committed to undergraduate, professional, and continuing education in Writing and Literature to lead multiple courses annually. The pool will remain active for one year; those wishing to extend their participation must reapply. The number of available positions fluctuates each semester based on departmental needs.
Courses are conducted online:
- Instruction is provided asynchronously via our learning management system (Canvas) or through live lectures (Zoom).
- Most live online lectures are scheduled for evenings and weekends (U.S. Pacific Time).

Instructor Responsibilities Include:
- Complete mandatory training programs by specified deadlines.
- Timely completion of administrative tasks such as updating syllabi, communicating required texts, and outlining classroom technology needs.
- Continuously improve course materials based on feedback.
- Prepare and deliver engaging course content and assessments.
- Design interactive activities to enhance student engagement and learning.
- Stay updated within the subject area.
- Utilize subject expertise and additional resources to enrich the curriculum.
- Employ course support platforms effectively.
- Clearly communicate learning objectives and grading policies to students.
- Respond promptly to student inquiries and learning needs.
- Implement inclusive teaching methodologies.
- Assess student performance and assign grades.
- Maintain student records according to institutional policies.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at application):
- Advanced Degree
Additional Qualifications (required at start):
- All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online. A legal permit allowing work in the U.S. is required for non-citizens or permanent residents.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional or academic experience in the subject area.
- 3+ years of teaching experience at a U.S. college/university.
- Experience in syllabus creation and online course development.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in instructional technology and learning management systems.
