Writing and Literature Instructor Pool
Position Overview
Compensation: The estimated pay for this role ranges from $1,200 to $2,300 per course, or $115 to $170 per student for asynchronous online courses. Compensation is influenced by various factors including course duration, number of units, student enrollment, and budgetary considerations.
Employment Type: These are part-time, temporary roles filled on a course-by-course basis.
Anticipated Start: Some roles may commence in the upcoming fall semester.
Review Process: Candidates will be evaluated as needs arise; being part of this pool does not ensure an available position.
Duration of Appointment: The length of appointments is contingent upon the course schedule. Renewals may occur based on necessity, funding, and performance.

Job Summary
UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division of the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors to teach online courses within our Writing and Literature programs.
We seek enthusiastic educators committed to undergraduate, professional, and continuing education in Writing and Literature, ready to lead one or more courses annually. This pool will remain active for one calendar year; those wishing to extend their presence beyond the final closing date must reapply. The number of available positions varies each semester based on departmental needs.
Courses are delivered online:
- Asynchronous instruction is conducted through our learning management system (Canvas) or via synchronous live lectures (Zoom).
- Most synchronous courses are scheduled for evenings and weekends (U.S. Pacific Time).

Instructor Responsibilities Include:
- Complete mandatory training programs by deadlines set by UC Berkeley.
- Timely completion of administrative tasks, including updating and submitting syllabi using the approved template, communicating required texts and materials, and outlining classroom technology needs.
- Make necessary adjustments to enhance the syllabus, curriculum, and course materials based on feedback.
- Prepare and deliver course materials, lectures, and assessments.
- Design engaging and interactive classroom activities to foster student learning.
- Stay updated within the subject area.
- Utilize subject-matter expertise and additional resources to enrich the curriculum.
- Employ course support platforms, including Canvas and Zoom.
- Clearly communicate teaching objectives and learning outcomes to students, along with grading policies.
- Respond promptly to student inquiries and learning needs.
- Implement inclusive teaching methodologies to accommodate diverse learners.
- Assess student achievement and assign grades accordingly.
- Submit final grades within two weeks of course completion.
- Address student inquiries regarding final grades as needed.
- Maintain student records in accordance with University policies.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)
- Advanced Degree
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)
- All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online. Non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents must possess a legal permit allowing work in the U.S. by the start date. Due to the part-time, temporary nature of these positions, UC Berkeley Extension cannot provide U.S. visa/work permits.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of professional and/or academic experience in the relevant subject area.
- Three or more years of teaching experience in the relevant subject at a U.S. college/university.
- Experience in syllabus creation, learning objectives, lectures, assignments, assessments, and quizzes.
- Experience in online teaching and/or developing academic content for online courses.
- Ability to articulate complex ideas effectively.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
- Proficiency in instructional technology, including Learning Management Systems (Canvas), video conferencing (Zoom), and Microsoft Office tools.
