Instructor Pool for Writing and Literature

Position Overview
Compensation: Estimated earnings range from $1,200 to $2,300 per course, or $115 to $170 per student for asynchronous online classes. Instructor pay is influenced by various factors including course duration, unit count, enrollment numbers, and budget considerations.

Employment Type: Part-time temporary roles are available based on specific course agreements.

Expected Start: Some roles may commence in the upcoming fall semester.

Review Process: Candidates are evaluated as needs arise; being part of this pool does not guarantee a position will be available.

Duration of Appointment: The length of the appointment is contingent upon the course schedule. Positions may be renewed based on necessity, funding, and performance.

Job Summary
UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division of the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors to teach online courses in our Writing and Literature programs.

We are looking for enthusiastic instructors dedicated to undergraduate, professional, and continuing education in Writing and Literature to lead one or more courses annually. The pool will remain active for one calendar year; those wishing to stay in the pool beyond the final closing date must reapply. The number of available positions varies each semester based on departmental needs.

Courses are conducted online:
  • Instruction is delivered asynchronously via our learning management system (Canvas) or through live lectures (Zoom).
  • Most live online lecture courses are scheduled for evenings and weekends (U.S. Pacific Time).

We seek qualified candidates with current expertise and/or teaching experience in the following areas (not limited to):

  • Literary Fiction Writing
  • Nonfiction Writing
  • Poetry
  • Public Relations Writing
  • Science Writing
  • Screenwriting

Literature
  • American Fiction
  • British Literature
  • Contemporary Literature
  • World Literature

Instructor responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Complete mandatory training programs by deadlines set by UC Berkeley.
  • Timely completion of administrative tasks such as updating and submitting syllabi using the approved template; communicating required texts and materials; and outlining classroom technology needs.
  • Make necessary adjustments to enhance the syllabus, curriculum, and course materials based on feedback.
  • Prepare and deliver course materials, lectures, and design assessments.
  • Create interactive and engaging classroom activities to enhance student learning.
  • Stay updated within the subject area.
  • Utilize subject-matter expertise and additional resources to enrich the curriculum.
  • Use course support platforms, including Canvas and Zoom.
  • Clearly communicate teaching objectives and learning outcomes to students, including grading policies.
  • Respond promptly to student inquiries and learning needs.
  • Employ inclusive teaching methodologies in the classroom.
  • Assess student achievement of learning outcomes and assign grades.
  • Submit final grades within two weeks of course completion.
  • Address student inquiries regarding final grades and consult with the Program Manager as necessary.
  • Maintain student records according to University policies.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Advanced Degree

Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)
  • All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online. A legal permit allowing work in the U.S. is required for non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents by the start date. UC Berkeley Extension cannot provide work permits for this position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 or more years of professional and/or academic experience in the subject area.
  • 3 or more years of teaching experience in the subject at a U.S. college/university.
  • Experience in developing syllabi, learning objectives, lectures, assignments, assessments, and quizzes.
  • Experience teaching online and/or creating academic content for online courses.
  • Ability to convey complex ideas effectively.
  • Strong verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in instructional technology, including Learning Management Systems (Canvas), online video conferencing (Zoom), and Microsoft Office tools.
