Position Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is in search of skilled operations support specialists for a pivotal role in Integrated Research Operations Support. This position is essential for enhancing operational excellence and facilitating ORNL's mission in groundbreaking scientific research. The selected candidate will collaborate within a cohesive team responsible for managing operational tasks linked to work control, ensuring alignment with scientific and engineering endeavors.

This role also involves providing essential support to research personnel, ensuring adherence to all relevant Federal and State regulations, DOE Orders, and ORNL policies concerning work control. The position is part of the Integrated Research Operations Support group within the Safety & Operations Support Division and will support the Isotope Science & Engineering Directorate (ISED).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary work control point-of-contact for research safety summaries (RSS), overseeing documentation for hazard identification and control. This includes coordinating RSS reviews to guarantee thorough peer and subject matter expert evaluations, ensuring timely approvals.
  • Facilitate the execution of operational activities necessary for achieving research objectives while ensuring compliance and safety throughout the research process.
  • Organize and participate in laboratory compliance inspections.
  • Promote and adhere to the principles of Safe Conduct of Research, emphasizing personal accountability for safe operations, raising safety concerns, and maintaining a proactive approach to hazard identification.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to enhance operational efficiencies and foster a culture of safety in support of the research mission, advocating for initiatives that promote these goals.
  • Align actions and priorities with ORNL's core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by cultivating a respectful workplace.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the integration of Integrated Safety Management (ISM) into work planning and execution with the support of a multidisciplinary operations team.
  • Contribute to the review and development of division or directorate-level procedures and guidelines as necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or operational discipline or a relevant technical field (e.g., health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental management, project management, engineering, operations, etc.).
  • 0-2 years of relevant technical experience is preferred.
  • This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy, necessitating participation in a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position, which includes passing a pre-employment drug test and ongoing random drug testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating effectively in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary, and integrated organizational environment.
  • Familiarity with work control processes in research and development or industrial settings.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary R&D environments or supporting industrial, radiological, nuclear, or secure operations.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet strict deadlines independently.
  • Experience with DOE systems and ORNL systems such as the Research Hazard Analysis and Control System and/or Integrated Safety Management.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance.

Special Requirements:

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This role involves various physical requirements and working conditions, necessitating a pre-hire physical examination after an offer is made.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy is required, along with participation in a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position.
