Overview:

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group within the Building and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is actively seeking qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. This role is integral to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's Building Technology Office and other DOE/EERE initiatives by innovating cutting-edge equipment aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, promoting decarbonization, and advancing renewable energy solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct, coordinate, and report on intricate research tasks related to energy conversion systems, including:
    • Prototype development
    • Material synthesis and analysis
    • Performance testing
    • Result analysis
    • Preparation of research publications
  • Design experimental setups, troubleshoot issues, execute experimental campaigns, perform materials synthesis and analysis, fabricate sub-components, optimize processes, and prepare technical documentation and research publications.
  • Collaborate and engage with researchers from academic institutions, national laboratories, and the private sector.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a closely related discipline obtained within the last five years.
  • Proven background and experience in:
    • Composite ceramic materials related to solid oxide cells (e.g., SOFCs, SOECs, RSOCs, etc.)
    • Design and operation of high-temperature processing equipment and experimental thermal/fluid systems
    • Electrochemical systems and instrumentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with catalysis, surface science, and analytical equipment focused on thermal characterization.
  • Experience in prototype development.
  • Skills in generating innovative ideas and writing proposals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities, along with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A demonstrated record of publications in relevant fields.

Special Requirements:

Candidates must have received their Ph.D. no more than five years prior to application and must fulfill all degree requirements before commencing their appointment. The duration of the appointment may extend up to 24 months, with potential for renewal based on performance and funding availability.
