Position Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking skilled operations support specialists for a pivotal role in Integrated Research Operations Support. This position is essential for enhancing operational excellence and facilitating the ORNL mission of cutting-edge scientific research. The successful candidate will collaborate within a cohesive team responsible for operational tasks related to work control, aiding science and engineering initiatives.

This role also involves assisting research personnel in adhering to all relevant Federal and State regulations, DOE Orders, and ORNL policies concerning work control. The position is situated within the Integrated Research Operations Support group in the Safety & Operations Support Division, providing matrixed support to the Isotope Science & Engineering Directorate (ISED).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary work control point-of-contact for research safety summaries (RSS), ensuring thorough documentation for hazard identification and management. Coordinate RSS reviews to guarantee timely approvals and authorizations.
  • Facilitate the execution of operational activities necessary for achieving research objectives while ensuring compliance and safety in research execution.
  • Organize and participate in laboratory compliance inspections.
  • Promote and adhere to the Battelle Safe Conduct of Research principles, emphasizing personal accountability for safe operations and a proactive approach to safety concerns.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and foster a safety-oriented culture in support of the research mission.
  • Align actions and priorities with ORNL's core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service, while advocating for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support the integration of Integrated Safety Management (ISM) into work planning and execution with an interdisciplinary operations team.
  • Contribute to the development and review of division or directorate-level procedures and guidelines as necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or operational discipline or a related technical field (e.g., health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental management, project management, engineering, operations).
  • 0-2 years of relevant technical experience is preferred.
  • This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy, necessitating a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a collaborative environment that is dynamic and multi-disciplinary, requiring interaction with management, researchers, and operational staff.
  • Familiarity with work control processes in research and development or industrial settings.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary R&D environments or supporting industrial, radiological, nuclear, or secure operations.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with a proven ability to meet strict deadlines independently.
  • Knowledge of DOE systems and ORNL systems such as the Research Hazard Analysis and Control System and/or Integrated Safety Management.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Physical requirements may necessitate a pre-hire physical examination following an offer.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy, which includes passing a pre-placement drug test and ongoing random drug testing.
