Lead Engineer, Performance Optimization

About the Role:
Okta, Inc. is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to enhance our Performance Engineering division. As our customer identity solutions expand rapidly, the demand for high-performing, scalable identity services has never been greater. The Performance Engineering team is tasked with diagnosing, identifying, and resolving performance challenges across our comprehensive distributed system. This encompasses the software we develop, data storage solutions, messaging frameworks, infrastructure, and the interactions between various system components.
Your Responsibilities:
- In the capacity of Principal Engineer, you will act as a leading technical authority within the team, conducting intricate analyses and coding to eliminate performance issues across our software landscape.
- Develop applications in various programming languages, including some Golang, across multiple services that support billions of logins monthly.
- Create documentation such as decision records and RFCs to articulate technical trade-offs and strategies, fostering understanding and agreement among stakeholders.
- Collaborate across functions with service leaders, architects, project managers, and quality assurance teams to drive enhancements in performance throughout our technology stack.
- Promote a proactive culture regarding performance, enhancing knowledge and awareness of performance management techniques, tools, and solutions within the engineering community to address issues early in the software development lifecycle.
- Engage with all aspects of the Customer Identity Cloud service, including code, infrastructure, and architectural considerations.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in senior software engineering roles, particularly in remote settings.
- Strong self-drive and a keen interest in investigation and experimentation.
- Proficiency in developing application software using frameworks like Fastify, with familiarity in Golang being advantageous.
- Experience with API-driven, cloud-native distributed system architectures operating in environments such as Kubernetes, AWS, and Azure.
- Familiarity with application performance monitoring tools like Datadog APM, Splunk, Honeycomb, New Relic, Dynatrace, or similar solutions.
- Knowledge of database systems such as PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
- Experience in designing and conducting performance tests aimed at validating improvements in key metrics, including requests per second (RPS), latency, query performance, and resource utilization.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, particularly in articulating technical challenges and solutions effectively across diverse teams.
- A commitment to enhancing software performance while maintaining reliability and security.
- Strong collaboration skills and a history of successful cross-functional teamwork.
