Position Overview

Salary:

RECOVERY SUPPORT SPECIALIST

The Recovery Support Specialist is a self-identified individual who has experienced mental health and/or substance use challenges and has maintained successful recovery for a minimum of two (2) years.

This role involves collaborating with a team of professionals dedicated to providing services to clients of Virginia Family Services. The Recovery Support Specialist is expected to uphold professional boundaries, assist with transportation options, and support individuals as they engage with services.

Key attributes for this position include honesty, respect for diversity, high personal standards, and professional conduct that reflects these values.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must be a former recipient of mental health and/or substance use disorder services.
  • Ability to manage and schedule activities and responsibilities that may change based on program and client needs.
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted Virginia Driver's License.
  • Must successfully pass an FBI National Background check to meet eligibility standards.
  • Familiarity with community resources, including social clubs and peer support initiatives.
  • Capability to recognize potential crisis situations and communicate this information to a supervisor promptly and appropriately.
  • Ability to build supportive and trusting relationships with individuals experiencing mental health and substance use disorders while respecting client rights and preferences in treatment.
  • Experience working in Recovery Home Settings.
  • Proficient in various communication methods, including written, oral, and digital platforms such as instant messaging, email, and video conferencing.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
  • Completion of detailed records of activities.
  • Participation in required training sessions as directed by a supervisor.
  • Commitment to personal wellness.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Associate degree in Human Services with two years of advocacy experience in a human service agency or healthcare setting is preferred.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent with four years of experience in a human service agency or healthcare facility.
