Senior Mechanic

This position is a shop-based role focused on the operation of critical machinery within the sheet metal division. The primary duties involve the proficient start-up, operation, and shutdown of assigned equipment. As a Senior Mechanic, this role serves as a mentor and leader for junior mechanics, embodying the core values of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation. The Senior Mechanic will also play a vital role in training and guiding less experienced team members while assisting leadership with daily tasks as needed. The overarching goal for every role at Baltimore Aircoil Company is to perform duties with integrity and excellence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prioritize personal and team safety by adhering to all safety protocols and utilizing appropriate safety gear consistently.
- Operate essential machinery to enhance productivity and ensure high-quality output.
- Complete daily and weekly maintenance checklists as required.
- Actively promote and maintain quality and process standards.
- Execute tasks in alignment with departmental goals for scrap reduction.
- Provide training and guidance to junior mechanics, enhancing their performance.
- Offer leadership in the absence of the Station Lead or Team Leader.
- Comprehend and communicate departmental metrics effectively to junior team members.
- Update and display metrics as assigned.
- Accurately manage documentation and online data entry as required.
- Document processes for knowledge retention and training purposes.
- Maintain and uphold 5S standards within the department.
- Engage in continuous improvement initiatives and projects.
- Contribute to safety enhancements and initiatives within the department.
- Produce work that meets the highest quality standards and instruct junior mechanics on quality practices.
- Ensure all activities align with sustainability goals, minimizing environmental impact, waste, and resource consumption.
- Foster a culture of innovation by generating original ideas to improve processes and services.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by plant leadership.
POSITION SCOPE
This role reports to the Team Leader, Station Leader, or designated supervisor within the Sheet Metal Department. It involves hands-on leadership and mentoring of junior mechanics while being prepared to assume departmental leadership roles as necessary. As a Senior Mechanic, expertise may be sought for participation in regional project teams, with an expectation to act as an influencer and subject matter expert.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Proficient in operating key fabrication machines, including but not limited to Laser, CNC, and Press Brake.
- Demonstrated capability to lead small teams effectively.
- Strong written communication skills for documenting processes and conveying information clearly to colleagues.
- Excellent verbal communication skills for professional interactions with customers and team members.
- In-depth knowledge of the sheet metal FAST program.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Comprehensive understanding of BAC's various models and components.
- Competent in basic mathematical operations and measurements.
- Skilled in using handheld measuring tools such as tape measures and micrometers.
- Good grasp of maintenance and troubleshooting techniques.
- Minimum of one year of experience in sheet metal fabrication.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and root cause analysis.
- Thorough understanding of safety hazards related to cranes and fixtures in the department.
- Commitment to safety and compliance with safety standards.
- Proficient in MS Excel and MS Access for data management and metric generation.
- Flexibility to work across various department stations and adapt to changing conditions.
- Able to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams to support plant objectives.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands of this role require the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods. Additional activities include walking, reaching, bending, and fine manipulation of controls. Working hours may vary across shifts, typically encompassing a standard forty-hour work week, with potential weekend overtime. The working environment may experience temperature fluctuations, both indoors and outdoors.
