Position Title: Experimental Research and Development Engineer

Organization: Air Force Research Laboratory, Turbine Engine Division

The Turbine Engine Division is seeking a highly qualified professional to engage in experimental research and development focused on innovative diagnostic techniques for turbine engines and related technologies.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in assisting senior researchers and team members by:

  • Executing research and development initiatives in turbine hot section experimental validation and diagnostic methodologies to analyze unsteady rotating flow dynamics and thermal transfer.
  • Overseeing the Heat Flux Instrumentation Laboratory, which includes operating infrared thermal imaging calibration systems and thin film sputter deposition apparatus for the fabrication of heat flux sensors.
  • Enhancing thermal imaging methodologies for extreme environments to improve turbomachinery design and maintenance practices.
  • Employing data analysis tools to handle extensive datasets aimed at technological advancements supporting the mission of the Air Force.
  • Collaborating with Department of Defense programs alongside U.S. Government, industrial, and academic partners.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Eligibility for SECRET level security clearance
  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Physics
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities
  • Genuine interest in hands-on experimental research and development
  • Capability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within an integrated team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with infrared imaging, spectroscopy, multispectral techniques, and optical data acquisition
  • Expertise in experimental data processing, image-processing tools, and turbine engine technologies
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as MatLab/Python, CAD/CAM software, LabView, and optical design software like Zemax
