Senior Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Summary:
As a Lead Mechanical Designer, you will be responsible for overseeing the complete mechanical design scope for automation projects from initial concept through to final implementation, with minimal direct supervision. This role involves developing design concepts, managing budgets, and ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery of mechanical components. You will also be responsible for training, mentoring, and coaching interns and junior mechanical design engineers.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Pre-Sale Duties:
- Develop viable automation concepts and create system design and layout drawings.
- Prepare budgets for the mechanical scope of work, including labor costs, purchased and fabricated components, assembly costs, and mechanical/controls interfaces.
- Post-Sale Duties:
- Define, design, and procure mechanical components and hardware to complete the defined scope of work.
- Assemble design criteria, define performance attributes (e.g., speed, space constraints), and interact with controls engineers to integrate controls into designs.
- Complete detailed designs and procure cost-effective purchased and fabricated components.
- Manage supplier relationships and procure necessary materials, including issuing orders and coordinating deliveries.
- Implementation Duties:
- Expedite the delivery of purchased components and assist in the assembly of mechanical hardware.
- Troubleshoot performance issues and finalize 'as-built' documentation.
- Support long-term field service issues and provide on-site support as needed.
- Maintain organized division records and files.
- Assist with other departmental functions as required based on business needs.
Essential Qualifications:
- A two-year degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering is required; a four-year degree is preferred.
- Five to ten years of hands-on experience in a mechanical design environment, including:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
- Experience designing automated systems using industrial robots.
- Experience with robot end-of-arm tooling, conveyor systems, material handling, and pick & place devices.
- Knowledge of cost-effective machining and fabrication processes.
- Demonstrated project management skills.

- Strong initiative and commitment to meeting deadlines.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Willingness to travel nationwide up to 25% of the time.
Desirable Experience and Qualifications:
- Experience in tool, die, and fixture design.
- Machine tool setup and operation.
- Industrial robot programming.
- CNC machine tool programming.
