Position Overview:

This pivotal role involves overseeing and managing all shop operations, including directing labor hours, scheduling equipment, collaborating with the HR department, approving equipment repairs, purchasing parts, and making critical decisions regarding equipment repairs. This position is accountable for the maintenance and repair of state-owned equipment both in the shop and on the road, particularly in the event of breakdowns during transit or highway maintenance activities. The INDOT Mechanic Supervisor also coordinates repair work for vehicles and equipment belonging to other agencies. A key responsibility of this role is to ensure the upkeep of winter snow and ice management equipment while managing the personnel involved in these processes.

Compensation:

This position typically starts with an annual salary of $53,000, with the potential for salary adjustments based on education and relevant experience.

Mechanic Positions:

Candidates possessing a current CDL will receive an additional $1 per hour for this role. Those without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain one, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will also earn an additional $1 per hour upon successful acquisition of their CDL.

INDOT offers a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 annually for full-time Mechanic positions to cover the purchase, replacement, and repair of tools necessary for maintenance and repair tasks related to INDOT's fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance machinery, and other fleet items.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose electronic engine control systems using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Repair systems utilizing modern diagnostic equipment.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and replace engine electronic sensors.
  • Repair and calibrate hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications.
  • Test drive various motorized equipment.
  • Repair, rebuild, and replace parts as necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate repair and service records.
  • Attend training sessions to enhance skills.
  • Utilize welding equipment for machinery and equipment repairs.
  • Conduct inventories of machinery and heavy equipment, ordering necessary parts and supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the garage area, equipment, and tools.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications for Success:

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree with 1+ years of experience, or
  • An Associate's Degree with 3+ years of experience, or
  • A minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience in a similar role.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of safety practices related to heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Extensive experience in vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to repair various types of equipment used in highway maintenance.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain accurate records.
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must provide personal tools and agency-approved steel-toe boots.
