Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations governing railroad operations.
- Conduct thorough inspections of railcar components to ensure they meet AAR and FRA compliance.
- Utilize computer systems to access and record information regarding car components, destinations, and repair histories.
- Demonstrate proficiency in using cutting torches across various positions.
- Achieve qualifications in SMAW and FCAW welding processes, including 2F, 3F, and 4F positions.
- Operate forklifts, light cranes, and car-moving equipment safely.
- Possess the ability to operate various vehicles, potentially requiring a CDL for Locomotive Service truck operation.
- Utilize rerailing equipment to rerail cars and locomotives, and perform tasks related to wreck service on the railroad.
- Fabricate, straighten, and replace steel components such as grab irons, handholds, ladders, and sill steps.
- Repair or replace defective parts, including wheels, safety appliances, and air brake valves, ensuring the integrity of the railcars.
- Commit to a safe working environment to minimize accidents and injuries.
- Wear necessary protective gear, including hard hats and safety boots.
- Complete required training and pass safety examinations annually.
- Undergo random drug and alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations.
- Pass all necessary assessments and background checks.
- Membership in a union is required for this position.
- Successfully complete a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.
Physical Demands
- Engage in heavy lifting, occasionally up to 50 pounds.
- Perform various physical activities, including stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
- Navigate long distances over uneven terrain.
- Exhibit auditory and visual acuity for tracking and inspection tasks.
- Work in environments with fluctuating heat levels.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Capability to provide clear instructions and guidance.
- Mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Previous mechanical experience is preferred.
- One or more years of experience in welding and fabrication.
- Completion of a Carman apprenticeship.
- Veterans and transitioning service members are encouraged to apply.
Selected candidates will participate in a comprehensive training program, including a week of Mechanical Safety Orientation followed by six weeks of specialized training in welding and fabrication. Travel for training may be required, with accommodations provided as per union agreements.
