Role Overview :

This pivotal position is responsible for overseeing and managing all shop operations, including directing labor hours, scheduling equipment, collaborating with the HR department, approving equipment repairs, purchasing parts, and making decisions regarding the timing and nature of equipment repairs. This role entails repairing and supervising state-owned equipment both in the shop and on the road in the event of breakdowns during transit or highway maintenance activities. The INDOT Mechanic Supervisor also coordinates repair efforts for vehicles and equipment belonging to other agencies. A key responsibility of this position is the maintenance of winter snow and ice management equipment, along with supervising the personnel involved in these processes.

Salary :

This position typically starts at an annual salary of $53,000, with potential adjustments based on education and relevant experience.

Mechanic Positions:

Candidates holding a current CDL will receive an additional $1 per hour for this role. Those without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain one, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will earn an additional $1 per hour upon successful acquisition of their CDL.

INDOT also offers a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 annually for full-time Mechanic positions to cover the purchase, replacement, and repair of tools necessary for maintenance and repair tasks related to INDOT's fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance machinery, and other fleet items.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role include:

  • Diagnosing electronic engine control systems using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Repairing systems with modern diagnostic equipment.
  • Identifying, troubleshooting, and replacing engine electronic sensors.
  • Troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating hydraulic system control units for highway salt applications.
  • Test driving various motorized equipment.
  • Repairing, rebuilding, and replacing parts of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performing preventative maintenance and servicing on vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducting miscellaneous mechanic work as needed.
  • Scheduling maintenance and repairs for equipment.
  • Maintaining service records.
  • Attending training sessions.
  • Updating shop manuals and parts catalogs.
  • Operating welding equipment for machinery and equipment repairs.
  • Utilizing computers for data entry and retrieval.
  • Managing inventories of machinery and heavy equipment, and ordering parts and supplies.
  • Keeping the garage area, equipment, and tools clean.
  • Performing tasks such as mowing grass and operating snowplows.

What You'll Need for Success:

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree with 1+ years of experience, or
  • An Associate's Degree with 3+ years of experience, or
  • At least 5+ years of relevant experience in a similar role.

Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.

  • A solid understanding of safety practices related to heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Proficiency in hydraulics and repair diagnostics.
  • Capability to repair equipment used in various highway maintenance activities.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools for vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to follow mechanical procedures and instructions.
  • Proficiency in welding and steel-cutting techniques.
  • Ability to complete records and reports accurately.
  • Capability to utilize repair manuals and parts catalogs effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks such as lifting and standing for extended periods.
  • A valid commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Personal tools and agency-approved steel-toe boots.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may involve direct supervision of one or more staff members.
