Position Overview:
This pivotal role is responsible for overseeing and managing all shop operations, including tracking hours worked, scheduling equipment, collaborating with the HR department, approving equipment repairs, purchasing parts, and making decisions regarding equipment repairs. This position entails repairing and supervising state-owned equipment both in the shop and on the road, particularly during breakdowns or maintenance activities. The INDOT Mechanic Supervisor also coordinates repair tasks for vehicles and equipment from other agencies. A key responsibility of this role is to maintain winter snow and ice management equipment while managing the personnel involved in these operations.
Compensation:
The starting salary for this position is typically $53,000 annually, with potential adjustments based on education and experience.
Mechanic Positions:
Candidates possessing a current CDL will receive an additional $1 per hour. Those without a CDL will have 90 days to obtain one, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will receive an additional $1 per hour upon successful acquisition of their CDL.
INDOT also offers a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 annually for full-time Mechanic positions to cover the purchase, replacement, and repair of tools necessary for maintenance and repair tasks related to INDOT's fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose electronic engine control systems using diagnostic tools and software.
- Repair systems utilizing modern diagnostic equipment.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and replace engine electronic sensors.
- Troubleshoot and calibrate hydraulic system control units for highway applications.
- Test drive various motorized equipment, including dump trucks and backhoes.
- Repair, rebuild, and replace parts such as electrical components and brake systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain repair and service records.
- Attend training sessions and update manuals and parts catalogs.
- Operate welding equipment for machinery repairs.
- Conduct inventories of machinery and order necessary parts.
- Maintain cleanliness of the garage and tools.
Qualifications for Success:
The ideal candidate should possess:
- A Bachelor's Degree with 1+ years of experience, or
- An Associate's Degree with 3+ years of experience, or
- A minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience.
Related certifications and coursework may be considered in lieu of formal education or experience.
Essential Skills:
- Knowledge of safety practices in heavy equipment repair.
- Expertise in vehicle and equipment repair.
- Understanding of hydraulic systems and repair techniques.
- Ability to perform maintenance activities for highway operations.
- Skill in using hand and power tools for repairs.
- Capacity to follow instructions and work collaboratively.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting and standing for extended periods.
- Possession of a valid commercial driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days.
