Position Overview

The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI) is seeking a Chief Technology Officer, Information Systems to operate in a hybrid model, requiring occasional onsite engagement. As a prominent subsidiary of Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc., HHRI serves as the research division of Hennepin County Medical Center, a leading acute care research and teaching facility. HHRI is recognized as one of Minnesota's largest nonprofit medical research organizations, consistently ranking among the top institutions for research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We are in search of a proactive and innovative IT leader to spearhead various technological initiatives at HHRI.

Role Summary:

The Chief Technology Officer will oversee the strategic management of technology value across the organization, ensuring maximum effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction for stakeholders. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of HHRI's operations, including federal privacy and security mandates, and will lead the team in adopting technologies that bolster HHRI's research and operational capabilities.

The CTO will identify and implement technology solutions that align with HHRI's strategic goals in technology, computing, and system security. They will build and lead a team focused on enhancing processes, efficiency, and user experience. Staying informed on trends and advancements in technology, the CTO will provide insights and recommendations for the integration of new tools and systems at HHRI. Collaboration with the VP-Operations/COO and other organizational leaders will be essential to ensure the effective integration and operation of both new and existing IT systems. Ultimately, this role will guide the organization's digital strategy and facilitate its execution through the IT team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive technology strategies for HHRI.
  • Lead a team that collaborates with researchers and other IT personnel to assess HHRI's long-term technology needs, including hardware and software requirements.
  • Utilize extensive experience and judgment to achieve objectives, including designing and refining solutions that meet HHRI's IT needs.
  • Oversee and evaluate all personnel involved in hardware and software development.
  • Manage IT budgets to ensure cost-effectiveness and the maintenance of a robust IT infrastructure.
  • Assess IT procedures, systems, and training needs, taking accountability for their effectiveness.
  • Review proposals from various stakeholders to determine feasibility and make recommendations for implementation.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct overall technology strategies and ensure compliance with federal IT security regulations.
  • Manage multiple projects, ensuring adherence to IT standards and methodologies.
  • Supervise project activities, ensuring timely completion within budget while meeting user expectations.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals for alignment with HHRI requirements and internal IT standards.
  • Provide budget oversight related to IT staff and departmental operations.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate IT staff in accordance with HHRI's human resources policies.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills is acceptable. Typically, a Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field is required, along with a minimum of 12 years of experience in structured programming, object-oriented design, client-server computing, and database management. Experience in a healthcare or academic setting is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. The ability to work effectively with diverse populations and demonstrate leadership in fostering teamwork is crucial. A solid understanding of project management methodologies and the ability to maintain confidentiality and manage time effectively are also required.
