POSITION OVERVIEW: The Principal Accountant for Grant and Support Services plays a crucial role in overseeing program and grant financial management, including the preparation of journal entries for monthly financial reporting, generating monthly grant invoices, and ensuring adherence to policies and program compliance. Reporting directly to the Controller, this role is tasked with the preparation and documentation of journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and verifying financial records and transactions, alongside various general ledger and accounting responsibilities. This position collaborates with all organizational departments, including research, support services, and the foundation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Manage all aspects of grant administration. Prepare funding draws with necessary documentation, ensuring compliance with federal regulations through proper maintenance of supporting documents.
  2. Develop and prepare diverse reports for both internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Ensure timely preparation and review of grant billing invoices or financial reports for multiple grant-funded initiatives. Monitor account balances and assist program directors with grant compliance and oversight.
  4. Support the external audit process.
  5. Conduct trial balance account reviews, perform account reconciliations, and report findings to the Controller. Investigate and recommend adjustments to budgets and billing processes.
  6. Analyze program budgets and report on spending patterns, identifying opportunities for cost savings and enhancements in financial management.
  7. Prepare deposits, scan documents for banking, and provide necessary documentation to the staff accountant for general ledger recording.
  8. Close revenue subsystems for all support services, research, and foundation on a monthly basis, including report generation and journal entry preparation; reconcile assigned accounts monthly; assist in reviewing and posting Accounts Payable batches; conduct ad hoc analyses as required. Additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting or Finance.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
  1. A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience with a focus on grants is required.
  2. Preferred experience includes 2 years in public accounting.
  3. Comprehensive understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  4. Experience in not-for-profit and healthcare sectors is advantageous.
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with experience in complex spreadsheets and pivot tables.
  6. Strong analytical and accounting capabilities.
  7. Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Capacity to operate independently with minimal supervision.
  10. Ability to collaborate effectively with employees at all levels, management, and external agencies.
REASONING ABILITY:
  1. Ability to address practical problems and navigate various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
  2. Capability to interpret a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, or schedule formats.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
  1. Must effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  2. Must frequently interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians and other departmental personnel, as well as outside agencies, while maintaining patient confidentiality.
