Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Associate to join our team at the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia's School of Medicine. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and performing research tasks, supporting the research of Carrie Cowardin, PhD, and contributing to the understanding of the maternal and child gut microbiome in early life growth and immunity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and execute research studies to investigate the impact of gut microbial communities on local and systemic inflammatory responses.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across the University to advance research goals and promote a culture of excellence.
  • Independently and creatively analyze data to test or refine hypotheses and visualize data findings in a variety of visual formats.
  • Act as an ambassador for the lab's research at local, regional, and national conferences and promote a culture of diversity within the laboratory.
  • Support the research of Carrie Cowardin, PhD, and contribute to the development of research proposals and manuscripts.
Requirements
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field, such as microbiology, immunology, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory techniques, including RNA/DNA isolation and sequencing, histological techniques, bacterial isolation and culture, and experience working with laboratory animal models.
  • Strong organizational and timeline management skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to promote a culture of excellence and diversity within the laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with gnotobiotic animals and a background in microbiology and/or immunology.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot problems and recommend solutions.
  • Experience with data visualization and reporting, with the ability to create high-quality visualizations and reports.
