Position Overview

Role Summary

As the inaugural Director of Impact and Advocacy at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, you will spearhead a transformative initiative as we approach our centennial. Our transition from a traditional botanic garden to a leading biodiversity conservation entity requires your expertise. In this pivotal role, you will monitor emerging policy trends and identify opportunities to enhance the use of native plants throughout the region and California.

Your responsibilities will include the formulation and execution of strategic policy initiatives and advocacy plans at local, regional, and state levels. You will oversee the coordination and implementation of the Garden's advocacy agenda, collaborating closely with teams in communications, horticulture, conservation, and education to foster relationships with external partners, community leaders, and stakeholders. Raising awareness about the significance of native plants and biodiversity in Santa Barbara County will be a primary focus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic planning and development of the Garden's advocacy program, establishing priorities and action strategies while coordinating with various departments.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify and prioritize efforts aimed at influencing municipal, county, and statewide policies to promote the integration of native plants in urban settings.
  • Draft position papers, policy briefs, and other communications to articulate the organization's objectives and drive public policy initiatives.
  • Facilitate meetings and discussions with elected officials and policy makers regarding the Garden's initiatives.
  • Advocate for biodiversity and native plant goals at public forums and community meetings, initially focusing on Santa Barbara County and expanding to neighboring regions.
  • Build and maintain a network of external partners and collaborators.
  • Establish a system to track relevant information, policies, and trends concerning California native plants and biodiversity, ensuring staff are trained in its use.
  • Monitor funding opportunities and related legislation at both state and local levels.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in policy and advocacy at a senior level.
  • In-depth knowledge of conservation policies and their implications for native plant usage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
  • Strong project management and presentation skills.
  • Experience in organizing advocacy and engagement activities.
  • A genuine passion for native plants.
  • A valid California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
