Position Overview:

The County of Santa Barbara's Air Support Unit (ASU) is currently seeking applications for the role of Helicopter Operations Pilot. This position plays a critical role in supporting various emergency response missions, including wildland firefighting, law enforcement operations, and search and rescue efforts.

Unit Collaboration:

The Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit operates as a collaborative effort between the Fire Department and the Sheriff's Office, ensuring a comprehensive response to all types of incidents. The unit is equipped with a fleet of helicopters, including Sikorsky HH-60L, Bell UH-1H, UH 1N, OH-58, and Cessna 206, ready to respond to emergencies at any time.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate helicopters for law enforcement, fire suppression, and rescue missions.
  • Conduct routine pre-flight inspections and ensure aircraft readiness.
  • Collaborate with a Crew Chief or Tactical Flight Officer for mission planning.
  • Participate in aerial firefighting, medical evacuations, and other emergency operations.

Work Environment:

Additional Information:

This position may require non-traditional work hours, including weekends and holidays, as part of a 24/7 operation.

Employment Standards:
  • Valid FAA Commercial Airman's Certificate with rotorcraft-helicopter rating.
  • Minimum of 2,500 hours of helicopter flight time as pilot-in-command.
  • Possession of a valid FAA Class II or higher medical certificate.
  • 30 hours of night flying experience.
