Liability Claims Adjuster

Location: Mason, MI, US Dart has the ability to hire at the mid-level or senior level for this position.

The Liability Claims Adjuster plays a crucial role in collaborating with our third-party claims administrator and insurers to oversee the claims investigation process. This involves assessing claims concerning liability, causation, and damages; formulating a resolution strategy; and ensuring claims are resolved fairly and equitably. The focus of this position includes general liability, product liability, auto liability, cargo claims, and property claims against the company, with potential involvement in workers' compensation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the third-party administrator (TPA) to ensure they have the necessary information for contacts and that customer service protocols are adhered to during interviews and reviews of records from claimants, witnesses, physicians, attorneys, police officers, etc., to gather essential information and ascertain the extent of the company's liability.
  • Examine available insurance policies to confirm applicable coverage and limits.
  • Oversee the TPA file to ensure appropriate and well-structured action plans for timely and cost-effective resolution of claims, in accordance with company practices and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain accurate reserves and related financial information within authorized limits.
  • Maintain electronic diaries for timely follow-up on claim activities.
  • Thoroughly document all work activities and records in RiskConsole (claims software system for Property and Cargo claims). Attach documents to the TPA system to ensure paperless claim files.
  • Coordinate with Quality Control personnel for timely and appropriate product testing to confirm the product manufacturer and thoroughly evaluate the product for any defects that may have contributed to the incident.
  • Manage litigated claims in coordination with both in-house and external counsel, adhering to company practices and procedures.
  • Resolve claims promptly and equitably, ensuring that releases, proofs of loss, or compensation agreements, and dismissals are documented in the file prior to closure.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with existing vendors (attorney firms, investigation companies, etc.) and establish new relationships as necessary.
  • Understand and apply multiple state laws and procedures relevant to claims management.
  • Participate in monthly/quarterly claims review meetings.
  • Assist in compiling and analyzing claims data for various internal and external reporting.
  • Support the manager in developing comprehensive, streamlined guidelines and procedures for claims handling.
  • Attend assigned conferences and training sessions (internal and external).

Core Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal mid-level Liability Claims Adjuster should possess the following:

  • A Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of liability claims experience, or a high school diploma or equivalent with five (5) years of liability claims experience.

The ideal Senior Liability Claims Adjuster should possess the following:

  • A Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of liability claims experience, or a high school diploma or equivalent with seven (7) years of liability claims experience.

Both levels must demonstrate:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in investigating, managing, and resolving all types of complex liability claims, including litigated claims.
  • Proven ability to handle complaints, resolve conflicts, and negotiate effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of advanced industry terminology and familiarity with claims software systems.
  • Understanding of multi-state liability laws and best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all organizational levels.
  • Ability to apply business acumen and creativity to develop innovative ideas and solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the capacity to prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative mindset to work effectively with team members.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically, both locally and overnight.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • A favorable motor vehicle report upon hire.
