POSITION SUMMARY:

Accountable for the provision of patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Responsible for overseeing and coordinating all nursing care for specific patients within the department, adhering to established clinical nursing practice standards. Collaborates with department staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery, aiming for optimal patient outcomes. Upholds the organization's vision and mission while integrating knowledge of patients' age and cultural diversity into care provision. Contributes to quality nursing care through performance improvement initiatives that yield positive patient care outcomes.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required
  • Current Texas Registered Nurse licensure
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; must obtain within two years of hire
  • Professional certification highly preferred
  • BLS certification required
  • ACLS certification required
  • Experience as a Charge Nurse
  • Willingness to be cross-trained in other areas
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians
  • Hospital experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of three years of clinical nursing experience with a comprehensive understanding of patient care processes. Demonstrated ability to apply the nursing process effectively in delivering care, including administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, developing care plans, collaborating with healthcare providers, and educating patients and their families. Capable of assisting the department director with supervisory duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promotes the facility's mission, vision, and values by effectively communicating them to staff and stakeholders.
  • Ensures that patient care aligns with the Nurse Practice Act of Texas and ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice.
  • Delivers nursing care utilizing sound clinical judgment.
  • Implements physician orders accurately and safely.
  • Assists with the admission, discharge, and transfer processes for patients.
  • Transcribes and executes new physician orders.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to meet unit needs.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and functionality of equipment, supplies, and work areas.
  • Adheres to standards set by the Texas Department of Health, CMS, and Joint Commission.
  • Completes and updates all employment requirements, including Employee Health and Departmental Competencies.
  • Administers medications and therapies within the scope of safe nursing practice.
  • Develops, modifies, and implements goal-oriented patient care plans in accordance with facility policies.
  • Reports clinical limitations or the need for assistance to the department director.
  • Follows regulations established by the Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures that support service provision.
  • Informs Nursing Administration and direct supervisors of any anticipated or actual issues.
  • Stays current with all new policies and procedures.
  • Provides guidance to both licensed and non-licensed staff in patient care delivery.
  • Anticipates potential problems and intervenes to mitigate adverse impacts.
  • Assists with unit scheduling and staffing.
  • Reviews staffing and prepares staff assignments.
  • Fosters a positive work environment by guiding staff to support the hospital's mission, offering developmental opportunities, and encouraging teamwork.
  • Ensures timely distribution and delivery of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Collaborates with other Charge Nurses to make informed decisions alongside the department supervisor.
  • Works with the department director to manage daily unit operations.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
