JOB SUMMARY: Eocene Environmental Group is seeking a qualified Archaeologist Crew Chief or Field Director. The selected candidate must be able to obtain permits to supervise field operations and manage small-scale cultural resource investigations, including surveys, site documentation, testing, excavation, and monitoring, independently ensuring that all deliverables align with client expectations and that all necessary field data is collected.

  • Consistently drafts complex desktop sensitivity analyses with precision.
  • Produces accurate and detailed DPR 523 forms without errors.
  • Capable of conducting thorough research and writing specific sections of reports (mining, homesteading, settlement, ethnographic, etc.).
  • Completes detailed and accurate survey, monitoring, and DPR 523 forms consistently.
  • Supervises both large and small teams of archaeologists in the field.
  • Effectively collaborates with construction teams.
  • Oversees and trains field staff, ensuring quality assurance and quality control of field data.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in various aspects of fieldwork (lithic analysis, prehistoric artifact identification, historic artifact analysis, site documentation, etc.).
  • Actively participates in and supports Eocene Environmental Group's commitment to safety and employee ownership.
  • Adheres to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and complies with all company policies and procedures.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed coursework leading to a degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field:
  • Crew Chief – bachelor's degree, completion of a field school, and 1 year of professional experience.
  • Field Director – bachelor's degree, completion of a field school, 2 years of professional experience, and is permitted or qualified for agency permitting based on the SOI Professional Qualification Standards.
  • Minimum of 2 years of field experience in California conducting archaeology.
  • Meets SOI PQS in archaeology (if MS or Ph.D.) or history (if BA/BS).
  • Ability to oversee large field operations.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficiently to perform job duties and communicate effectively with employees and vendors.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in using tablets (Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy) for documenting cultural resources.
  • Experience with sub-meter GPS receivers.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet).
  • Permitted or permittable on BLM lands in California, Nevada, Oregon, and/or Washington (Field Director or Principal Investigator).
  • Previous training in NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental regulations.
  • Strong writing and editing capabilities.
  • Ability to assess resources for NRHP-eligibility.
  • Experience in authoring multiple archaeological site forms and inventory reports.
  • Authored a master's thesis in a relevant field.
