Cultural Connection Facilitator

ABOUT US
Just Like a Mom (JLAM) collaborates with K-12 educational institutions to enhance the engagement of Black students and their families through a practice known as othermothering. This culturally responsive approach serves as a bridge, drawing from the pedagogical methods of Black educators (Collins, 2000; Mawhinney, 2012; Stovall, 2022; Jougantos, Stovall and Borunda). The essence of othermothering is reflected in the actions and cues of culturally aware school staff when interacting with students of color and their families. When students feel a sense of belonging within the school environment, their chances of success increase significantly. Therefore, Just Like a Mom was established to foster these essential cultural connections within the school setting through the practice of othermothering.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Just Like a Mom employs othermothering, community engagement, and cultural partnerships to ensure that students and their families experience a sense of belonging at school, maintain connections even when away, and receive resources to support their daily lives. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Building positive relationships with students and their families.
- Creating a safe space for students to discuss conflicts and challenges related to school and home.
- Documenting all interactions with students using designated forms and providing weekly updates to the site principal.
- Identifying community resources that may benefit students and/or their families.
- Providing snacks and beverages in the designated space for students.
- Participating in monthly parent meetings in person.
- Facilitating connections between students and teachers where appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Just Like a Mom is looking for professionals with experience in K-12 education and backgrounds or interests in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Human Development, Psychology, Education, or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates residing in the local area.
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is between $38,000 - $42,000. This is a contractual role, and the position is set to commence at the beginning of the school year and conclude at the end of the academic year. Each school site has unique schedules and expectations that will be communicated to qualified candidates.
