Position Title: Support Services Specialist

Supervisor: Day Services and/or Residential Services Program Manager

Program Area: LGBTQA1+ Low Barrier Shelter

Position Summary

This role is essential for ensuring the well-being, safety, and comfort of guests at the shelter. The Support Services Specialist will be responsible for providing crisis intervention to individuals seeking assistance, guidance, or referrals. It is crucial for the incumbent to remain alert throughout their shift. All staff members are expected to embody the organizational values and show sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds of the clients served. In line with our commitment to public health and safety, KBEC has instituted a COVID-19 Vaccination Policy requiring all employees to be fully vaccinated and boosted as per applicable laws. Medical or religious exemptions may be requested but must receive approval from the DC Department of Health. Those granted exemptions must provide weekly negative COVID-19 test results as required by KBEC.

Key Responsibilities

To succeed in this role, the individual must effectively perform each essential duty. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with known disabilities.

  • Collaborate with the Shelter Coordinator, Case Managers, and other personnel to:
    • Conduct a thorough initial screening process to assess guest eligibility for program services, including assessments, intakes, and enrollment as necessary.
    • Assist guests in their housing searches and achieving rapid rehousing objectives.
    • Support guests in completing applications for essential services and identification documents, including Social Security cards, SNAP, Medicaid, and birth certificates.
  • Ensure the safety and security of guests, volunteers, visitors, and staff by clearly communicating expectations and performing regular internal and external perimeter checks during shifts.
  • Conduct inspections of rooms and personal belongings during shifts.
  • Adhere to agency and shelter protocols for incident reporting.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to potential emergencies at the shelter, following established protocols, including the immediate evacuation of campus buildings when necessary.
  • Facilitate orientation for new guests to ensure they understand expectations, policies, and procedures.
  • Recognize and effectively respond to the needs of guests.
  • Must hold Food Safety Manager Certification (SERV Safe and DC Department of Health) and provide meal services to guests during shifts.
  • Engage in regular supervision with the Shelter Coordinator, providing updates as needed.
  • Maintain guest files and manage data in compliance with program requirements and KBEC Group, Inc. guidelines.
  • Stay informed about program software and other relevant information regarding shelter programs, such as HMIS and DHS Smart Sheets.
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers, contractors, and donors.
  • Assist guests and cleaning staff in maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of the shelter and grounds, including sweeping, mopping, laundry, and general cleaning.
  • May be required to operate the agency van to transport guests to appointments and services as needed.
Qualifications and Additional Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to fulfill each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

  • Must possess one of the following:
    • A high school diploma or associate degree with at least one (1) year of relevant work experience; OR
    • A bachelor's degree in any field (preferably in human services or a related area).
  • Preferred experience in any of the following areas:
    • Customer service
    • Direct Support Professional (DSP) roles with the elderly or developmentally disabled
    • Hospitality services, such as hotel or front desk duties
    • Residential services
    • Childcare or teaching
    • Security or safety roles
  • Fluency in both oral and written English is required; bilingual skills in client languages (such as Spanish, Creole, and Farsi) are preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is preferred; if not certified, the individual must be willing and able to obtain certification through training provided by NVFS.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overnight and weekend shifts, as part of a 24-hour on-call system.
  • Must remain alert and awake during work hours.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Capability to respond to physical emergencies, including immediate evacuation of campus buildings and addressing potential medical and behavioral situations of clients.
  • Successful completion of background checks is required upon hire, including a TB test, CJIS (FBI) clearance, DC Police Clearance, drug screening, and a health and wellness general screening by a nurse practitioner or physician.
