About the Group:
The Solar and Space Physics Group comprises approximately 50 dedicated professionals and postdoctoral researchers engaged in pioneering scientific investigations. Our team is at the forefront of original research, providing scientific oversight for instrumentation that measures space physics phenomena, leading national initiatives in heliophysics, and supporting the design and execution of various spaceflight missions.

Key Responsibilities:
As the Lead Research Scientist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading a team of Ph.D. scientists in the exploration of solar and space physics.
  • Ensuring adequate funding and staffing for in-flight mission projects and ongoing studies.
  • Maintaining staff expertise through effective hiring, retention, career development, and mentoring.
  • Providing strategic vision and leadership for future research directions and supporting proposal development in response to emerging business opportunities.
  • Coordinating with various organizations, including internal groups and external sponsors, to enhance collaborative efforts.
  • Developing and mentoring future leaders within the team.
  • Managing the overhead budget and overseeing the maintenance of laboratories and facilities.
  • Continuing to engage in technical leadership within your scientific discipline through participation in space missions and conducting relevant research.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, you should meet the following criteria:

  • A Ph.D. in a field pertinent to heliophysics.
  • Over 15 years of post-bachelor's experience in heliophysics research.
  • A proven track record of collaboration with NASA.
  • Strong communication skills and experience managing technical staff in an inclusive environment.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates will stand out if they possess:

  • More than 5 years of experience in line management.
  • Demonstrated leadership within the heliophysics community through committee work, editorships, or professional society involvement.
  • Experience in leading scientific initiatives related to instruments and/or missions.
