JOB SUMMARY

This position is designated as non-bargaining unit and the incumbent shall serve in an "at-will" capacity.

This role may be assigned to various locations. Applicants must be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

The Riverside Transit Agency is seeking to fill a vacancy in the Maintenance Department. This role is responsible for overseeing maintenance and facility personnel, monitoring productivity, and ensuring adherence to agency policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are standard for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
  • Assigns tasks and coordinates employee activities to ensure optimal efficiency.
  • Assists in diagnosing mechanical issues, including rebuilding, repairs, or replacement of various vehicle components and systems.
  • Prepares comprehensive cost estimates and recommendations regarding the feasibility of significant repairs.
  • Monitors the upkeep of facilities.
  • Ensures maintenance is conducted on all agency vehicles and organizes vehicle maintenance records accordingly.
  • Schedules and coordinates vehicle maintenance with dispatchers to enhance service and vehicle availability.
  • Oversees and monitors the preventative maintenance program.
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of all subordinate maintenance staff.
  • Acts as a mechanic in emergency situations.
  • Trains employees in occupational health, safety, vehicle maintenance, and equipment operation.
  • Selects and assigns staff, ensuring equal opportunity in hiring, promotion, and other employment practices; identifies staff development needs and ensures that training is provided; maintains proper labor relations and employment conditions.
  • Adheres to safety standards and all documentation requirements. Enforces safety rules and procedures. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local hazardous material laws.
  • Prepares various daily reports and maintains databases monitoring fleet maintenance, performance, and activity.
  • Coordinates the execution of maintenance contracts.
  • Conducts daily safety meetings and monthly safety discussions.
  • Prepares and conducts employee evaluations and administers discipline as necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises mechanics, service personnel, and community service workers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, labor contracts, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving issues.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent to journeyman mechanic status; an AA/AS degree is preferred. Must have three years of experience working on heavy-duty equipment or buses, and at least one year of supervisory experience in maintaining heavy-duty vehicles and/or alternative fuel buses.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages, decimals, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Knowledge of basic office equipment and personal computers. Must be familiar with industry fleet management systems, software, and other programs such as Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Access, etc.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Requires appropriate license(s) with endorsements and certificates to operate a passenger motor coach. Automotive Refrigeration certificates are also required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of methods, equipment, and tools used in vehicle maintenance operations. Knowledge of parts room procedures. Knowledge of construction and operation of buses and motor vehicle equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and supervise maintenance department personnel. Ability to enforce the preventive maintenance program, shop procedures, and safety standards. Ability to perform mechanical repairs as needed. Ability to evaluate maintenance personnel issues and accurately address them. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments and agencies. Ability to assess subordinate personnel.
