Position Overview:
The Waste Collection Specialist will play a crucial role in delivering safe, efficient, and friendly waste management services to our valued clients. This position involves the collection of solid waste and recyclables from designated routes and transporting them to appropriate facilities.

Compensation: $28 per hour.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Safely operate a residential and recycling collection vehicle, utilizing side-load and/or rear-load systems, along with ancillary equipment and hydraulic systems for waste collection.
  • Efficiently load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the collection vehicle.
  • Utilize onboard equipment to compact waste materials effectively.
  • Adhere to prescribed operational techniques to minimize mechanical failures.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections, maintaining accurate documentation as required by management.
  • Promptly report any mechanical issues to the maintenance team and supervisors.
  • Ensure compliance with route quality standards set by management.
  • Follow all safety protocols and operational guidelines in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle, including both interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Identify and appropriately handle prohibited waste items.
  • Supervise assigned helpers, if applicable.
  • Adhere to all relevant laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Ensure personal protective equipment is worn at all times.
  • Report any accidents or incidents to supervisors immediately.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor while interacting with customers and the public.
  • Keep accurate records of services rendered.
  • Manage inventory of containers and carts, recommending additional purchases as necessary.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to enhance routing efficiencies.
  • Be available for overtime as needed.
  • Participate in safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • At least one year of commercial driving experience or completion of a CDL training program.
  • Must meet safety-sensitive function criteria as per company standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with vehicle components and basic maintenance for safe operation.
  • Ability to maneuver the vehicle in tight spaces and utilize mirrors for backing.
  • Capability to identify unacceptable waste materials.
  • Strong communication skills for effective interaction with customers.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and understanding documents and maps.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Physical capability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds using proper techniques.
  • Coordination skills to manage multiple limbs while performing tasks.

Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Ability to perform various physical activities including standing, walking, and reaching.
  • Visual acuity for close and distance vision, as well as depth perception.
  • Capacity to lift/move weights ranging from 10 to 100 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to work in noisy environments.

Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and humidity.
  • Work primarily conducted outdoors, away from the branch location.
  • Frequent interaction with traffic and other vehicles.
  • Work environment may be loud due to operational equipment.
