Job Overview:

The primary role of the Automotive Refinish Specialist is to deliver an outstanding customer experience through precise refinishing techniques, ensuring that each vehicle is restored to its pre-accident condition. This position requires collaboration with all team members to meet the key performance indicators (KPIs) of the repair facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute the WOW (Wow Operating Way) plan consistently.
  • Maintain a positive demeanor when engaging with customers and colleagues.
  • Conduct refinishing work in accordance with insurance protocols and the quality standards set by Gerber Collision & Glass.
  • Assess body and preparation repairs for any issues that could affect the quality of the refinishing process; inform the production supervisor as necessary.
  • Ensure all necessary tasks outlined in the Repair Orders (RO) are completed to meet Gerber's quality benchmarks.
  • Carry out all refinishing tasks following factory specifications and company procedures.
  • Correct any paint imperfections through wet sanding and polishing techniques.
  • Ensure that all formulations, preparations, top coatings, and curing processes align with OEM recommended standards.
  • Manage paint material costs efficiently in line with company KPIs.
  • Perform surface preparation, vehicle masking, priming, and top coating as needed.
  • Apply primers, sealers, basecoats, color coats, and clear coats using the correct formulations according to paint manufacturer guidelines.
  • Accurately mix paint to achieve the desired color match.
  • Promptly inform the Repair Planner of any additional damages not noted on the RO.
  • Assist management in recommending and implementing new equipment.
  • Stay informed about the status of assigned vehicles and help resolve issues to keep all vehicles on schedule for timely delivery.
  • Consistently use all required safety equipment and adhere to proper refinishing protocols in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Follow all procedures for hazardous waste disposal.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, including the upkeep of the paint booth and filters, according to vendor guidelines.
  • Clearly explain technical diagnoses and necessary repairs to non-technical individuals, including team members and customers.
  • Engage in continuous learning of new technical information and techniques through formal training sessions to stay updated with evolving automotive technology.
  • Complete the Quality Control (QC) Checklist before transferring vehicles to the next department.
  • Keep the production area clean and organized throughout the workday, ensuring a thorough cleanup at the end of the day.
  • Work according to the daily production schedule as directed by the Production Supervisor.
  • Notify the production supervisor of any collision repair issues that may affect the production process.
  • Provide support to all team members as needed.
  • Participate in monthly Health & Safety and staff meetings when required.
  • Attend training sessions and workshops recommended by management.
  • Uphold the company's KPIs (Sales/ GP/ NP/ CSI/ AR/ CT&TT).
  • Embody the core values of Gerber: Honesty, Integrity & Respect.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures as per established business practices.
  • Actively engage in daily production meetings with the management team as required.
  • Consistently demonstrate actions and behaviors that support our commitments.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a collision repair facility in a refinishing capacity.
  • Membership in the Provincial College of Trades is preferred.
  • PPG Certification is preferred.
  • I-Car Registered (working towards Gold Class certification).

Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of manufacturers' repair/refinishing processes and adherence to company standards.
  • Ability to efficiently and cost-effectively utilize selected vendor materials and general supplies.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning through attendance at industry-related training.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret work scope from vehicle estimates or work orders.
  • Comprehensive understanding of vehicle repair practices.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating multitasking skills while working under pressure.
  • Physical ability to bend, crouch, reach, handle tools, and lift approximately 51 lbs.
  • Must provide personal tools.
