Position Overview

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is tasked with the preparation and distribution of medications and pharmaceutical supplies for patients across all age groups, following the receipt of medication orders from healthcare providers.

This role also involves providing medication-related information and clinical services to both patients and healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of all relevant State and Federal pharmacy laws and regulations.
  • Reviews, interprets, clarifies, and processes medication orders to ensure patient safety using available clinical data and patient profiles.
  • Facilitates a secure and effective medication utilization process through collaboration and communication with other healthcare professionals.
  • Oversees workflow to guarantee that all daily distribution and clinical responsibilities are fulfilled, while supervising technical staff to ensure accurate and timely completion of distribution tasks.
  • Contributes to the efficient and economical use of medications, supplies, and resources, promoting rational medication utilization.
  • Conducts monthly inspections of medication units and provides guidance to nursing staff on the proper storage and management of medications, including controlled substances.
  • Delivers medication information and educational sessions to patients and healthcare personnel, and participates in committees or teams as needed.
  • Regularly monitors the medication utilization process and reports any discrepancies to enhance medication safety within the healthcare facility.
  • Engages in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Provides direct supervision to pharmacy students and interns as defined by pharmacy leadership.
  • Maintains professional conduct and performance, contributing positively to patient and employee satisfaction.
  • Adheres to compliance requirements as specified in the Employee Handbook.
  • Follows all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

A Pharm.D. or B.S. Degree is required. Preference is given to candidates with residency or hospital experience (3-5 years). A current pharmacy license in the State of Alabama is mandatory.

License-eligible pharmacists (e.g., Pharmacist Graduate Externs or pharmacists licensed in other states) may be considered, provided they successfully complete the required pharmacist licensing examinations by the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy within three months of employment.

Active participation in professional organizations is highly encouraged. Proficiency in operating computers, calculators, telephones, and other pharmaceutical equipment is essential. Candidates must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Working Conditions

Environmental Factors: Exposure to contaminants and hazardous conditions, requiring the use of protective or safety equipment.

Psychological Factors: Regular interaction with others, occasional encounters with difficult individuals, daily use of electronic communication, and teamwork.

Physical Requirements

Physical activities include talking, hearing, bending, twisting, walking, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. The role involves light work, with the ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently.

Candidates must be capable of performing duties with or without reasonable accommodation and tolerate prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing. Normal or corrected hearing and vision are required, along with the ability to manage potential exposure to disease, infection, and hazardous materials. Physical presence onsite is essential.
