Position Overview

The Clinical Nutrition Specialist is accountable for delivering comprehensive nutrition services to both inpatient and outpatient populations. This role encompasses nutrition evaluation, tailored dietary planning, patient education, and nutritional interventions aimed at enhancing patient health outcomes. The specialist ensures that patient satisfaction, quality of care, compliance with regulatory standards, and effective resource utilization are prioritized.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct nutritional screenings for patients across all age groups, identifying those at risk and documenting findings in the medical records. Utilize various assessment techniques, including anthropometric measurements and laboratory data interpretation.
  2. Design, update, and personalize nutrition care plans based on collaborative input from patients, their families, and the healthcare team.
  3. Provide dietary recommendations aligned with established guidelines and current best practices.
  4. Integrate evidence-based research into clinical practice to enhance patient care.
  5. Implement physician-directed protocols for dietary modifications and nutrition-related actions, ensuring adherence to facility-specific procedures.
  6. Manage nutrition support therapies, including enteral and parenteral nutrition, in accordance with established protocols and individual patient needs.
  7. Deliver services in a structured, collaborative, and patient-focused manner, participating in the necessary processes for expanded roles.
  8. Engage in multidisciplinary care planning and family meetings to discuss patient progress.
  9. Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations and patient rights policies.
  10. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory standards and complete documentation accurately and promptly.
  11. Communicate effectively with team members, patients, and families through various channels, including in-person consultations and electronic communication.
  12. Mentor and train new staff and interns as required.
  13. Advise on patient care and food service matters within the department.
  14. Educate patient services staff regarding specific dietary needs and prescriptions.
  15. Adhere to infection control policies and participate in performance improvement initiatives.
  16. Attend departmental meetings and contribute to staff development and patient care discussions.
  17. Support patient satisfaction goals by delivering high-quality service.
  18. Exhibit ownership attributes that foster excellent customer service.
  19. Comply with all departmental policies and maintain a clean working environment.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required, along with completion of an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program. A Master's degree is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications: Registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is mandatory. A current state license as a Dietitian is required. Candidates who are registry-eligible must obtain a temporary state license prior to employment and pass the CDR exam within six months of hire.

Active participation in professional organizations is highly encouraged. Advanced practice certification in a specialized area of dietetics is also recommended.

Skills: Proficiency in reading and interpreting scientific literature, financial documents, and legal materials. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for effective interaction with various stakeholders. Basic mathematical skills for calculations related to nutrition are required. Familiarity with electronic medical record systems and standard computer applications is necessary.

Working Conditions

Environmental: The role involves working in a shared office environment and visiting patient care areas, with potential exposure to biological hazards. Compliance with safety and infection control protocols is essential.

Physical: The position requires light physical activity, including sitting, walking, and occasional lifting of up to 35 lbs.

Psychological: Frequent interaction with patients and healthcare professionals is expected, necessitating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage challenging situations effectively. Documentation and communication are primarily conducted electronically.
