Position Overview

The Pharmacy Operations Manager is tasked with overseeing and directing pharmacy staff, programs, services, and operational activities. This role provides essential leadership and guidance to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students, interns, and residents engaged in inpatient pharmacy care and operational functions. The manager collaborates with other departmental leaders to ensure efficient pharmacy purchasing, receiving, inventory management, and overall supply chain operations. This position encompasses the leadership, management, and coordination of pharmacy operations, medication utilization systems, project planning, human resource management, education, research, and community engagement within the defined responsibilities. All duties are performed in conjunction with the pharmacy leadership team under the supervision of the Corporate Director of Pharmacy. The complexity of this role necessitates a well-rounded skill set, including time management, effective communication, creativity, strategic vision, teamwork, leadership, clinical expertise, mentorship, change management, and educational outreach.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Coordination and Implementation of Medication Systems and Operations: Direct and manage the delivery of safe, timely, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered pharmacy services. Optimize technology and automation for resource efficiency. Ensure compliance with sterile and non-sterile compounding practices. Analyze medication error reports and implement quality improvement strategies. Oversee peri-operative pharmacy services and manage workflows in collaboration with medical staff.
  2. Human Resource Management: Supervise pharmacy personnel, evaluate performance, and lead team meetings. Foster professional development through coaching and support. Address personnel issues proactively and manage labor costs effectively.
  3. Practice Optimization: Monitor staff performance, recognizing high achievers and addressing underperformance. Serve as a mentor for students and residents, promoting a culture of innovation and positive change.
  4. Planning and Project Leadership: Contribute to the development and execution of the department's strategic plan. Identify business opportunities for pharmacy services and mentor staff in project management.
  5. Compliance and Regulatory Oversight: Maintain knowledge of relevant state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations. Collaborate with leadership to ensure adherence to all regulatory standards.
  6. Participate in management on-call duties.
  7. Ensure performance metrics, patient satisfaction, and financial targets are met.
  8. Adhere to organizational behavioral standards, fostering positive relationships.
  9. Utilize electronic communication and management systems effectively.
  10. Comply with all organizational policies and procedures.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Pharm.D. or B.S. Degree with a minimum of 3 years of pharmacy experience.
  • Pharmacy residency is preferred.
  • Current licensure or eligibility to practice pharmacy in Alabama is required.
  • Five years of hospital pharmacy experience, including supervisory roles, is necessary.
  • Project management skills are advantageous.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of personnel are essential.
