Position Overview

The Pharmacy Operations Manager is tasked with overseeing and directing pharmacy staff, programs, services, and operational activities. This role is pivotal in providing guidance and leadership to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, students, interns, and residents engaged in inpatient pharmacy care and operational functions. Collaboration with other departmental managers is essential to ensure the efficiency of pharmacy purchasing, receiving, inventory management, and overall supply chain systems. The manager will lead and coordinate pharmacy operations, medication management systems, project planning, human resource management, education, research, and community engagement within their scope of responsibility. This position operates in conjunction with the pharmacy leadership team under the guidance of the Corporate Director of Pharmacy. The complexity of this role necessitates a broad and well-developed skill set, including time management, communication, creativity, teamwork, leadership, clinical expertise, mentorship, and change management.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Medication Systems and Operations Management: Direct and oversee the delivery of safe, efficient, and patient-centered pharmacy services. Optimize the use of technology and automation to enhance operational efficiency. Ensure compliance with sterile and non-sterile compounding practices. Analyze medication error reports and implement quality improvement strategies. Manage pharmacy services in peri-operative care and collaborate with medical staff to enhance medication use within the operating room.
  2. Human Resource Management: Supervise pharmacy personnel, conduct performance evaluations, and facilitate team meetings. Support staff in achieving professional development goals through coaching and mentorship. Address personnel issues proactively and manage labor costs effectively.
  3. Practice Optimization: Monitor and evaluate staff performance, recognizing high achievers and addressing underperformance. Serve as a mentor for students and residents, fostering a culture of innovation and positive change within the pharmacy practice.
  4. Planning and Project Leadership: Contribute to the development and execution of the department's strategic plan. Identify opportunities for new pharmacy services and mentor staff in project management methodologies.
  5. Compliance and Regulatory Oversight: Maintain knowledge of state and federal pharmacy regulations. Collaborate with leadership to ensure adherence to all regulatory standards.
  6. Management On-Call Coverage: Participate in on-call management duties as required.
  7. Performance Standards: Uphold patient and employee satisfaction metrics and financial performance as outlined in evaluations.
  8. Behavioral Standards: Adhere to established behavioral standards, fostering positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  9. Technology Utilization: Proficiently use electronic communication and management software.
  10. Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Pharm.D. or B.S. Degree with a minimum of 3 years of pharmacy experience.
  • Preferred completion of a pharmacy residency.
  • Current licensure or eligibility to practice pharmacy in the State of Alabama.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in hospital pharmacy, with supervisory experience.
  • Preferred skills in project management and strong interpersonal abilities.
