Position Summary:

The Anatomic Pathology Technician will be responsible for the meticulous handling of surgical specimens, ensuring accurate processing and preparation for diagnostic analysis. Key tasks include embedding, sectioning, staining, and covering slides with precision. The technician will collaborate closely with pathologists and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure optimal functionality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive and accession all surgical specimens, ensuring their integrity throughout the processing stages.
  • Assist pathologists in the cutting of specimens for tissue processing.
  • Decalcify bone marrow biopsies and other bone specimens to facilitate sectioning.
  • Embed fixed, dehydrated, cleared, and infiltrated tissue samples in embedding medium, ensuring precise orientation for accurate sectioning.
  • Prepare 2-4 micron thick paraffin sections using a rotary microtome, demonstrating thorough knowledge of sectioning techniques to produce optimal results.
  • Perform routine staining, including Hematoxylin & Eosin, and operate automatic staining equipment.
  • Apply coverslips to slides using appropriate equipment.
  • Label slides accurately with surgical accession numbers and match requisitions accordingly.
  • Prepare and stain tissue samples for the identification of bacteria, fungi, cancer, enzymes, antigens, or tissue structure abnormalities.
  • Prepare all solutions for special stains and histological procedures in accordance with MSDS guidelines.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation regarding workload, record keeping, temperature charts, and preventative maintenance.
  • Ensure that all completed tissue blocks and slides are organized in correct numerical order.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment to prevent breakdowns and ensure efficient repairs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical sciences from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 2 years of full-time experience in a histopathology laboratory.
  • Completion of an accredited histotechnology program and ASCP registration is preferred.
