Job Title: Pathologist's Assistant

Job Summary:

The Pathologist Assistant will work closely with pathologists to ensure accurate and efficient processing of specimens and contribute to the preparation of anatomical diagnoses.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Specimen Preparation: Assist in the preparation and performance of gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Indirect Supervision: Under the indirect supervision of a pathologist, describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination, including preparation of frozen section (when applicable).
  • Specimen Accessioning: Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Clinical Records: Obtain pertinent clinical records, case history, laboratory data, copies of scans and X-rays, when indicated.
  • Photography: Photograph specimens as needed.
  • Transcription: Use voice-activated transcription system to dictate gross descriptions.
  • Post-Mortem Examinations: Assist in preparation and performance of post-mortem examinations, including: Ascertain proper and legal authorization for autopsies. In case of error or question, initiate procedures to obtain proper authorization.
  • Prosection: Perform or assist the pathologist in the prosection, including external examination, in situ organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, and dictation or recording of data such as organ weights, presence of body fluids, gross pathology findings.
  • Biological Specimens: Procure biological specimens for analysis (blood cultures, viral cultures, toxicological material, etc.).
  • Documentation: Arrange for still and/or video documentation of the body, organs, and other pertinent material.
  • Preliminary Diagnosis: Summarize the clinical history and assist the pathologist in preparation of the preliminary anatomic diagnosis.
  • Tissue Sections: Select and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination.
  • Additional Duties: Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in a health science or related field; Graduate of an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program.
  • Experience: Completed at least one year of clinical rotations in autopsy and surgical pathology grossing.
  • Certification: ASCP certified as a PA or eligible to sit for the ASCP certification exam.
